Double crop rice fields
In the days of March, under the golden sunshine pouring down like honey, many fields in the border of Ia Mo commune (Chu Prong district, Gia Lai) are filled with the laughter of people harvesting the winter-spring rice crop. Few people expected that the fields of cracked soil in every dry season would now be filled with the golden color of rice, the concrete canals overflowing with water.
Carrying each bag of rice onto a tractor, sweating profusely, Mr. Rmah Hinh (45 years old, Klã village, Ia Mơ commune) excitedly said: “Previously, in the dry season, this land was left fallow due to lack of water. Every year, people could only grow one rice crop thanks to the rain, but the yield was not high. Since the irrigation canal reached the fields of Klã village, many households have learned to grow two rice crops. This season, my family grew 3 sao of wet rice, and harvested 29 bags of rice. This year, we no longer have to worry about hunger."
Sharing the joy of the harvest, Ms. Siu Thoai (24 years old, Kla village, Ia Mo commune) smiled and said: "This season, my family planted 5 sao of wet rice, so we no longer have to worry about not having enough rice to eat when the rainy season comes. Thanks to the irrigation water source, for nearly 2 years now, my family has escaped poverty and knows how to grow rice 2 times a year."
Sharing the joy of the rice harvest of the people, Mr. Nguyen Tuan Anh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Ia Mo commune, excitedly said: Thanks to the Ia Mo irrigation project, the lives of the people here have changed a lot. The whole commune has a rate of ethnic minorities of more than 84%. Previously, the rate of poor households was 60%, now it is about 25%.
Although people can grow rice twice a year, life is still difficult due to lack of water. Currently, the fields depend on irrigation water from the Ia Mor irrigation project.
Promoting Ia Mo irrigation function
Ia Mo commune currently has 260 hectares of rice growing 2 crops/year, while the natural area is over 43 thousand hectares. Currently, there are still 6 villages in the area with many fields that do not have irrigation canals. When there is enough water, people will certainly proactively develop a multi-crop economic model, actively contributing to hunger eradication and poverty reduction.
The Ia Mor irrigation project was built with an investment capital of more than 3,000 billion VND. According to the design, the Ia Mor irrigation project has a water surface area of more than 2,800 hectares, and is one of the major irrigation projects in the Central Highlands. This irrigation project is expected to provide irrigation for more than 14,000 hectares of agricultural land in Gia Lai province and 4,000 hectares of agricultural land in Ea Sup district, Dak Lak province.
Currently, the Ia Mor irrigation project has completed phase 2, with the construction of the main East and West canals and has deployed the construction of about 10.5km of small branch canal system, 6km of pumping canal system to bring water to people's fields. However, some sections have not been able to invest in the construction of branch canal systems, causing many agricultural areas of people to remain "thirsty" and dry.
Regarding the reason why the Ia Mor irrigation project has not yet fully exploited its irrigation capacity, Mr. Hoang Binh Yen, Deputy Head of the Ia Mor irrigation project management board (under the Irrigation Construction Investment Management Board 8, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) said: In 2007, the Ia Mor irrigation project with an investment value of more than 3,000 billion VND was started, meeting the irrigation needs of more than 14,000 hectares in the two provinces of Gia Lai and Dak Lak.
However, due to the conversion of more than 4,700 hectares of forest land, many irrigation areas are still dry and thirsty. Recently, the Management Board has made a proposal and the Provincial People's Committee accepted it, submitting it to the Gia Lai Provincial People's Council for approval to convert 4.57 hectares of forest to build a branch canal through the forest, bringing water to the fields in Ia Mo commune.
The Management Board will soon report to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment for approval of the project to build 10 water branch canals over 30 km long, with a capital of about VND 209 billion. It is expected to start construction in the third quarter of 2025 and be completed by the end of 2026, ensuring an irrigation area of 2,105 hectares.
At the 25th thematic session (March 1), the Gia Lai Provincial People's Council issued a resolution deciding on the policy of changing the purpose of using 4.57 hectares of forest to build the Ia Mor irrigation project's branch canal system project, Chu Prong district. The decision promises to bring many changes to people in the border area. Mr. Hoang Binh Yen, Deputy Head of the Ia Mor irrigation project management board, said: "For a long time, due to forest land, the project has not yet maximized its capacity. Therefore, this is a good sign for people in the Chu Prong border area, who will soon have water to serve agriculture, growing rice 2-3 crops/year, improving crop productivity and quality of life."
