Converting inefficient areas to coffee growing
Suitable for growing at an altitude of more than 1,000m above sea level, with a cool climate all year round, Arabica coffee (locals often call it cold-country coffee) is one of the main agricultural products of Kon Tum province and is being strongly developed.
In 2025, Kon Tum province aims to plant 1,000 hectares of new cold-climate coffee to increase the total area to more than 5,000 hectares. Accordingly, cold-climate coffee will be concentrated in key districts such as Dak Glei (300 hectares), Tu Mo Rong (350 hectares), Kon Plong (350 hectares). Recently, local people and authorities have been actively preparing conditions in terms of land, seeds, human resources, etc. to complete the set goals.
To ensure progress according to plan, Kon Tum province has assigned localities to review land funds in accordance with land use planning to effectively grow cold-climate coffee. At the same time, localities have promoted and mobilized people to convert ineffective crop areas to grow cold-climate coffee.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuc, Deputy Director of Kon Plong District Agricultural Service Center, said that as soon as the plan was made, Kon Plong District directed the communes to review the land area in households to plant new coffee trees, ensuring the completion of the plan.
To have land for effective coffee plantation, the People's Committees of communes have mobilized and encouraged people to destroy old coffee gardens that are no longer able to grow and replant. At the same time, they have converted ineffective cassava growing areas and vacant land to coffee plantations.
In Tu Mo Rong district, as soon as the target was assigned, the locality developed a plan to implement the Project to restore and develop cold-climate coffee trees by 2025 in the area.
Proactive source of seedlings
Mr. Vuong Van Muoi, Vice Chairman of Tu Mo Rong District People's Committee, said that the district has directed the Department of Agriculture and Environment to take the lead in implementing solutions to convert inefficient and low-yielding crop areas to cold-climate coffee. In addition, it will build a soil map to serve the development of cold-climate coffee; coordinate with the People's Committees of communes to guide the planning work, land use plans, and ensure land funds to implement projects to develop raw material areas and coffee processing facilities in the district.

Meanwhile, Mr. Le Viet Nam, Chairman of Dak Glei District People's Committee, said that the district directed departments and localities to combine and arrange capital sources to support people with cold-climate coffee seedlings and techniques to ensure the planting of 300 hectares of new trees assigned this year.
To complete the plan, the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Kon Tum province as well as the People's Committees of Dak Glei, Tu Mo Rong, and Kon Plong districts have proactively sourced quality seedlings, fully meeting the goal of planting 1,000 new hectares.
Typically, Kon Plong district has cooperated with WaSi Institute and Can Tho University to grow about 2,000,000 cold-climate coffee seedlings (planted about 400 hectares), exceeding the assigned plan by 114%.
The Department of Agriculture and Environment has also prepared 130,000 cold-climate coffee seedlings to build demonstration models in 3 districts with a total area of 26 hectares.
Mr. Nguyen Tan Liem, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Kon Tum province, said that up to now, the total number of cold-climate coffee seedlings prepared for new planting in the province is more than 5,000,000 trees, equivalent to newly planting more than 1,000 hectares according to the set target.
“In general, through review, the source of seedlings deployed at nurseries including TN1, TN2 and THA1 varieties… ensures quality, high yield and quality varieties,” said Mr. Nguyen Tan Liem.
