On March 31, Da Nang Hospital informed that the Department of Neurology - Musculoskeletal - Clinical Hematology (Da Nang Hospital) had just successfully performed an autologous stem cell transplant for a patient with multiple myeloma. This is the third autologous stem cell transplant performed at Da Nang Hospital.
Specifically, patient Ho Thi N (born in 1973, residing in Quang Ngai city, Quang Ngai province) had severe bone pain and could not walk, so she went to Da Nang Hospital for examination.
Through the testing process, the doctors assessed that the patient was in the high-risk group, stage 3 multiple myeloma, so a bone marrow transplant using autologous stem cell transplantation was indicated. The patient underwent bone fusion surgery and drug treatment at Da Nang Hospital for 4 sessions, each session lasting 3 weeks.
After treatment, tests showed that the patient had achieved complete remission. The patient was transferred to the transplant area of the Organ Transplant and Stem Cell Transplant Center (absolutely sterile isolation area).
Doctors from the Department of Neurology - Musculoskeletal - Clinical Hematology performed an autologous stem cell transplant for the patient. After nearly 20 days of stem cell infusion, the patient was stable, walking normally and was discharged from the hospital.
Directly performing the autologous stem cell transplant for patient N, Dr. Tran Thi Thanh Huong, Department of Internal Medicine, Neurology - Musculoskeletal - Clinical Hematology (Da Nang Hospital), said that the difficulty of the transplant was calculating the amount of stem cells to be extracted to perform the transplant successfully; most importantly, ensuring an absolutely sterile environment for the patient.
Departments and rooms coordinate closely to ensure clean air, RO water source, strictly controlled food, and ensure that all patient supplies are sterilized...
According to Dr. Thanh Huong, autologous stem cell transplantation is a new advanced treatment method applied in Da Nang; specifically, taking the patient's own stem cells and transplanting them back into the patient, helping to quickly restore the patient's blood-generating system after high-dose chemotherapy, in order to prevent life-threatening complications.
This technique offers a chance to live and significantly improves the quality of life for patients with malignant hematological diseases such as lymphoma, myeloproliferative syndrome, multiple myeloma, leukemia...
Previously, in 2023, Da Nang Hospital successfully performed the first autologous stem cell transplant with the support of the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion. To date, the hospital has routinely performed this technique.
This not only affirms the expertise and skills of the medical team but also opens up new hope for patients with severe hematological diseases in the Central Highlands region.
Thanks to that, patients can access advanced treatment methods right in their local area without having to travel far, reducing the burden of costs and effort./.
