In recent times, Thai Thuy district has actively implemented the One Commune One Product (OCOP) program to localities, production facilities, and businesses in the area. Currently, the district has 40 typical and outstanding products recognized as OCOP products. Each OCOP product has contributed to increasing income, creating jobs for people, and promoting socio-economic development in rural areas.
Tien Thiet Company Limited (Thuy Son commune) from Tien Thiet water fern basket product recognized as OCOP in 2022 has developed dozens of more products made from water fern, creating jobs for nearly 400 local workers.
Realizing that participating in the OCOP program will help businesses expand their markets, Tien Thiet Company Limited (Thuy Son Commune) has proactively participated. With the guidance of specialized sectors and continuous efforts, in 2022, Tien Thiet water fern basket products of Tien Thiet Company Limited were recognized as 3-star OCOP.
Mr. Dinh Xuan Toi, representative of the company, said: Participating in the OCOP program, Tien Thiet water fern basket products have affirmed their brand, creating opportunities for the company to expand their production scale. Currently, the products not only serve domestic customers but are also exported to foreign markets, especially demanding markets such as Europe, America, Japan... In addition to water fern basket products, the company produces products made from traditional sedge, rattan and bamboo such as paper boxes, fruit trays, cup trays, gift baskets, clothes baskets... The company has developed more than 10 satellite facilities, producing 10,000 - 20,000 products/month, creating jobs for nearly 400 local workers with an income of 2 - 4 million VND/person/month.
Having been with Tien Thiet Company since its inception, Ms. Dinh Thi Mien, the head of the water fern weaving group in Hamlet 3, said: Weaving water fern is not difficult, "picking up and making a living" in every spare time, I can earn nearly 100,000 VND/day. Our water fern weaving group has 20 members, thanks to this side job we have a stable monthly income. Hopefully this profession will develop further.
Not only Tien Thiet Company Limited but most of the entities participating in the OCOP program have exploited the potential and advantages of the locality to produce typical products, contributing to creating jobs for many workers and promoting rural economic development.
Typically, Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tuyen, Thuy Xuan commune, has taken advantage of available raw materials from the local fishing industry to create OCOP Hong Ngoc anchovy products with the flavor and identity of his coastal homeland.
Mr. Tuyen confided: I realized that the local anchovy source was abundant, so I boldly opened a production facility, built the brand "Hong Ngoc Anchovy" and received local support to register to participate in the OCOP product. I am very happy that the product was recognized as a 3-star OCOP, known to customers inside and outside the province. To ensure food hygiene and safety and improve competitiveness, in 2023, I abandoned the manual coal-fired fish drying kiln and invested more than 1 billion VND to buy 3 electric fish dryers. Currently, the facility sells 3-5 tons of dried fish/month, creating jobs for 20 local workers with an income of 7-8 million VND/month. In the coming time, I will continue to develop more OCOP products from raw materials of croaker and anchovy.
According to Mr. Le Xuan Duong, Vice Chairman of Thuy Xuan Commune People's Committee, the OCOP program has created a driving force for the locality to develop its socio-economy. The most important of which is to contribute to increasing income, creating jobs for people and promoting local products, promoting the strong development of fishing logistics services. Currently, all local anchovy fishing boats are purchased by Mr. Tuyen, so there is no need to worry about output and product prices. With the policy of building OCOP products with characteristics of coastal areas, we continue to strengthen propaganda and mobilize local businesses, production and business households to participate and create favorable conditions for the subjects to develop OCOP products from the sea.
Mr. Nguyen Huu Ha, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Thai Thuy district, said: Implementing the OCOP program, the district has issued a plan to implement, propagate and encourage economic organizations in communes and towns to participate; organize training courses and improve capacity in implementing the topic; build typical products that ensure criteria, as well as advantages in terms of origin, local strengths and sustainability. It is worth noting that when selected to participate in the OCOP program, cooperatives and households have effectively exploited local strengths, met market demand; changed production practices, promoted the creativity of people and traditional occupations, and expanded production in rural areas. In 2024, the district strives to have 5 more products with 3 stars or more, including: tornado potatoes, fried fish balls, sausages (Duong Phuc commune); lotus tea (Thuy Van commune); red peanuts (Hoa An commune). Overcoming difficulties, the district continues to promote propaganda, mobilization, and encouragement of organizations and individuals to develop OCOP products; support and guide enterprises, cooperatives, production and business households to complete OCOP product profiles; focus on creating conditions for entities in product promotion and marketing activities, contributing to effectively implementing the criterion of "production organization" in building advanced new rural areas and model new rural areas.
