Nguyen Filip is not sure of a starting position.
In the opening match of the AFF Cup 2024 against Laos, goalkeeper Nguyen Dinh Trieu was the main goalkeeper. Laos is considered a much weaker opponent than Vietnam, so this is an understandable decision by coach Kim Sang-sik, who wants to give many players a chance to play. In the second match (1-0 win over Indonesia) and the third match (1-1 draw with the Philippines), Nguyen Filip returned to the starting lineup. At this time, many people thought that the Vietnamese-American goalkeeper would continuously guard the goal of the Vietnamese team, because the nature of the matches was increasingly important. But in the decisive match for the ticket to the next round, against Myanmar in the last round, when the Vietnamese team was not allowed to lose, Nguyen Filip once again had to give way to Dinh Trieu. This was the most surprising decision of coach Kim.

In fact, although the final match of the group stage is predicted to be very tense, everything is still under the control of the Korean coach. The Vietnamese team is superior to its opponent in both skill level and player quality. Therefore, Mr. Kim has the right to make his own calculations, in order to serve the tactics and strategies of the Vietnamese team. When facing Myanmar, the Korean coach changed up to 9 positions in the starting lineup compared to the previous match against the Philippines. Not only Nguyen Filip but all current Vietnamese players are not sure to appear in the starting lineup in the next match. This is proven after the past 4 matches of the Vietnamese team at the AFF Cup 2024. It can be understood that this is a way for coach Kim Sang-sik to maintain competition within the Vietnamese team, making every player constantly strive when practicing as well as when entering the field.
Besides, the Vietnamese team is now different from the time of Coach Troussier. Mr. Troussier's philosophy is to control, play small passes and develop the ball right from the home team's penalty area. As for Coach Kim Sang-sik, the Vietnamese team limits back passes and prioritizes direct play, especially cross-line passes from defenders. Therefore, depending on the nature of each match, Nguyen Filip's strength of good footwork is sometimes not too necessary. In addition, Nguyen Filip still cannot speak Vietnamese fluently. This is his limitation in communicating with teammates and commanding the defense.
Although Nguyen Filip is considered the most comprehensive goalkeeper in the Vietnamese national team at the moment, he is not guaranteed a starting position like before. There is no other way, the Vietnamese-American goalkeeper needs to improve all his skills, and at the same time show stability when given the opportunity to play to win the trust of coach Kim Sang-sik.
