According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, in March 2025, Vietnam's rice exports were estimated at 950,000 tons with a total turnover of about 463.6 million USD. In the first three months of the year, Vietnam exported a total of 2.2 million tons of rice, reaching a value of 1.14 billion USD. Compared to the same period last year, the export volume increased slightly by 0.6%, but the value decreased sharply by nearly 20%.
The average export price of rice in the first quarter of 2025 will reach about 522 USD/ton, down more than 20% compared to the previous year. This is a worrying decrease, especially when compared to the period 2016-2022, when the price of 5% broken rice often fluctuated between 420 and 535 USD/ton. In particular, in November 2023, the price peaked at 663 USD/ton when India stopped exporting, but has now decreased to 264 USD/ton, equivalent to a drop of nearly 40%.
However, fragrant and specialty rice still maintain high prices because they serve distinct market segments. Many businesses continue to successfully export rice varieties such as ST25 at prices ranging from 800 to over 1,000 USD/ton. As a result, although the price of common rice dropped below 400 USD/ton in January, the average export price for the whole month remained above 600 USD/ton.
In the first quarter of 2025, the Philippines remained Vietnam's largest export market, accounting for 42.1% of the market share. The next two markets were Ivory Coast and Ghana, with 16.3% and 10.2%, respectively.
