Training in reporting skills on vulnerable groups

On May 24, in Ho Chi Minh City, the Center for Journalism Training - Vietnam Journalists Association in coordination with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Vietnam organized a training course on Skills for Reporting on Vulnerable Groups for nearly 40 reporters and editors in charge of reporting on this field from newspapers and radio stations nationwide.

At the program, the organizers provided participants with information on definitions, related terms, and ways to identify the differences between three vulnerable groups: women, people with disabilities, and LGBT people (people whose sexual orientation, gender identity, expression, or set of gender characteristics tend to be discriminated against) compared to other groups of people)...

Participants also openly discussed issues of domestic violence, discrimination, gender discrimination, sexual harassment, etc., and worked in groups to discuss skills in reporting on vulnerable groups. From there, many approaches were suggested to report on vulnerable groups. Specifically, journalists need to focus on discovering new, interesting, and accurate stories and presentations about vulnerable groups and reporting convincingly to raise public awareness of issues related to vulnerable groups. Adhering to information principles to ensure accurate and objective communication activities and contributing to promoting diversity and combating discrimination against these groups.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hai Van, Director of the Center for Journalism Training, shared that with the function of informing and orienting public opinion, press agencies have the responsibility to provide the public with accurate information about all areas of society, including information about the rights of vulnerable groups and the potential disadvantages they face. By combating stereotypes and promoting comprehensive reporting, journalists can contribute to eliminating stigma and harmful representations of vulnerable groups.

On this occasion, the organizers also introduced the draft book "Handbook for journalists reporting on vulnerable groups". The book was jointly produced by the Vietnam Journalists Association, the Center for Journalism Training and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).
