LEGO Group begins trial operation of $1.3 billion factory in Binh Duong

From November 6, LEGO Group began trial operation of the factory in Binh Duong to prepare for official production from early 2025.

On November 6, at VSIP III Industrial Park, Binh Duong province, LEGO Group began testing systems and equipment at the factory to prepare for operation from early 2025.

According to the progress announced by the LEGO Group, as of early November 2024, the construction and equipment installation progress at the factory has reached about 90%.

The trial operation phase is the beginning of a months-long testing and commissioning process to ensure that when the factory is granted an operating license in early 2025, it can meet the same rigorous quality and safety standards as all LEGO factories around the world.

Leaders of Binh Duong province and LEGO Group leaders pressed the button to test run the LEGO children's toy factory.

“The testing and calibration of the injection molding machines and packaging lines at the factory marks an important milestone showing that the project is on schedule. This is thanks to the support of central and local ministries, departments, partners and staff,” said Mr. Jesper Hassellund Mikkelsen, Senior Vice President of Asia Production and General Director of LEGO Vietnam Factory of the LEGO Group at the factory trial operation ceremony.

Mr. Jesper Hassellund Mikkelsen added that LEGO is stepping up recruitment, and expects the number of LEGO employees to triple to nearly 1,000 people by 2025.

The LEGO Binh Duong factory is designed to be the most sustainable LEGO factory ever, aiming for energy efficiency and promoting the use of renewable energy. Currently, the group has installed 12,400 rooftop solar panels with a total expected capacity of about 7.34 MWp, equivalent to the electricity needed for 1,270 households in a year.

The packaging line at the factory will use paper bags instead of plastic bags to package LEGO bricks. The factory also aims to create zero landfill waste, as is the case at other LEGO Group factories.

“For us, sustainable development is not only a commitment, it is also a guideline for all activities of the LEGO Group in general and the factory in Vietnam. We hope that children will continue to inherit a green planet, just like each LEGO brick we create with the mission of inspiring creativity and accompanying the years for future generations.” Mr. Jesper Hassellund Mikkelsen emphasized sustainable development.

Answering a question from a reporter from the Investment Electronic Newspaper - Baodautu.vn , Mr. Jesper Hassellund Mikkelsen said that after officially going into operation, it will take another 2-3 years for the factory to operate stably.

The LEGO Group will then evaluate the investment performance and, depending on the business situation and market development, consider expanding the investment in the next phase.

However, he highly appreciates the development potential of the children's toy market in Asia in general and Vietnam in particular because this is a market with a large population and good economic growth.

LEGO's factory in Binh Duong covers an area of 44 hectares (equivalent to 62 football fields), including 5 buildings: office area, energy center, plastic injection and packaging area, automatic warehouse and other works with a total area of 150,000 m2.
The project has a total investment of 1.3 billion USD.
