In recent months, the Sam Altman-led artificial intelligence company has signed similar deals with the Financial Times, Business Insider owner Axel Springer, France's Le Monde and Spain's Prisa Media.
While OpenAI will use Time's content to fuel and train its products, the New York City-based publication will have access to pioneering AI technology to develop new products, the companies said.
“We’re partnering with Time to make it easier for people to access news content through our AI tools,” said OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap.
While some media companies, like the New York Times and The Intercept, have previously sued OpenAI over its use of their journalism, these content partnerships are essential to training AI models.
These deals can also provide news publishers with a way to generate revenue. Last year, Meta blocked news sharing on Facebook and Instagram in Canada after the country’s Online News Act required internet giants to pay for news on their platforms. Separately, Canada and Google had to reach a deal to keep news in search results.
The deal between OpenAI and Time comes at a time when news publishers have raised objections to AI companies breaking web standards to block content scraping for synthetic AI.
