On the afternoon of July 30, news from An Giang Provincial Police said that through expanding the investigation, the Provincial Police Investigation Agency issued a decision to temporarily detain in an emergency 5 people related to the case of transporting 19 kg of metal, suspected to be gold in An Phu District.
At the same time, an emergency search warrant was executed on the locations, residences, and workplaces of the people involved. Thereby, more than 14 kg of gold bars, gold jewelry, and many other objects, documents, and assets were temporarily seized.
The detainees were part of a group involved in smuggling and illegally transporting gold across the border, which was secretly monitored and destroyed by An Giang Provincial Police.

An Giang Provincial Police added that through the work of grasping the situation, the police force discovered that the gold shop system in Chau Doc City and An Phu District had suspicious signs of illegal transportation of gold goods across the Vietnam - Cambodia border. From there, the Board of Directors of An Giang Provincial Police directed the Economic Police force to closely coordinate with the professional units of the Provincial Police to verify and clarify.
After hiding in Cambodia, suspect Nguyen Tan Phong surrendered at the Long Binh International Border Gate Border Guard Station. Phong was handed over to An Giang Provincial Police for processing.
Illegal gold transportation route across the Vietnam - Cambodia border
After a period of monitoring, on July 25, Colonel Lam Phuoc Nguyen (Director of An Giang Provincial Police) and Colonel Bui Tan An (Deputy Director, Head of the Provincial Police Investigation Agency) directly directed the professional forces to divide into two groups, road and river, to organize an ambush.
At around 7:00 p.m. on July 25, at Binh Di River, through Long Binh Town (An Phu District), the waterway task force discovered Nguyen Tan Phong (45 years old, residing in Long Binh Town) driving a motorboat transporting goods from Cambodia to Vietnam, so they approached and arrested Phong. However, taking advantage of the darkness, Phong jumped into the river and fled to Cambodia.
19 kg of metal, suspected to be gold, was carefully packaged for illegal transportation from Cambodia to Vietnam.
At the same time, the road task force controlled and invited Ho Van Son (60 years old) and Nguyen Hoai Tam (22 years old, both living in An Phu district) to the police station for clarification.
Here, Son and Tam confessed and admitted to participating in a ring illegally transporting gold bars and gold jewelry across the Vietnam - Cambodia border to gold shops in Chau Doc City for sale. Phong, realizing that he could not escape, later turned himself in.
The identities of the remaining two suspects have not been released by authorities.
Metal bars suspected to be gold are evidence of the case.
The case of transporting 19 kg of metal suspected to be gold is being urgently investigated and handled by An Giang Provincial Police according to the provisions of law.
