Trang The Hy's work continues to be a pain reliever for readers.

On the morning of January 3 in Ho Chi Minh City, the Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association and the Nguyen Dinh Chieu Literature and Arts Association (Ben Tre) organized a discussion "The life and career of writer Trang The Hy" to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the "sage of Southern literature".

Guest writers and literary critics from the Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association shared about Trang The Hy's works.

Writer Trang The Hy, whose real name is Vo Trong Canh, was born on October 29, 1924 in Huu Dinh commune, Chau Thanh district, Ben Tre province, and passed away on December 8, 2015 in his hometown. He did not write much, in his entire life he only wrote about 50 short stories, 20 poems and 4 novels published in serials in newspapers.

Speaking at the seminar, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association Trinh Bich Nhan said: "Although colleagues and the public no longer see his thin and pensive figure in this world, Trang The Hy's work and personality are still stories that are affectionately passed down in spiritual life, not only in the Southern region and not only in the writing community. 15 years after the country's reunification is a ripe time for Trang The Hy's creative journey, with a series of short stories that have created a strong impression, such as: Warm Rain, Debt of Tears, The Art of Being a Stepfather, Coming Home Before the Rain, Singing and Crying, The 13th Wound ...".

Editor Ngo Thi Hanh recalled many memories with the writer, especially when working on the poetry collection Bitter & Sweet : "I remember your poems, or also remember you, the beauty in the midst of ordinary life, the moments that I admired even though nearly 16 years have passed. That year, 2009, poet Chim Trang and I often visited you, about every 2-3 months, and this time it was for the poetry collection. Before that, you often humbly said that you did not write poetry, just short notes of a writer. But after many conversations, you had to give up, because Hanh did it... so now I'm looking it up again. I had the chance to sit down and look up your short notes, the poems written on a typewriter with some corrections - handwritten corrections. In total, at that time, I collected 13 poems you wrote and about 10 translated poems. So I have the collection Bitter & Sweet , the title of the collection was chosen by me, and it was accepted by you quite quickly."

"Take it easy being a painkiller"

According to Master Doan Thi Nhung: "Trang The Hy is a genuine Southern writer, attached to and knowledgeable about his Southern homeland, that Southern quality is clearly shown in each of his works. His works are not many, but each short story by Trang The Hy is truly a pearl that the author has filtered from life. The precious things in Trang The Hy's short stories are the precious things that the author sees and finds from very ordinary things. Nguyen Ngoc calls him 'The wise man of Southern literature', Pham Quang Trung calls him 'The old man', Ngo Thao calls him 'The ancient tree of Southern literature'. All of these names show that in the assessment of some people, Trang The Hy's contribution to the Southern literature region is quite significant".

This year's Dedication Award of the Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association honors writer Trang The Hy (1924-2015).

President of the Ho Chi Minh City Writers Association Trinh Bich Ngan likened: "Trang The Hy leisurely spent his whole life as a 'pain reliever maker'."

Writer Trinh Bich Ngan said: "Trang The Hy's attitude of self-respect was consistent throughout his life, allowing him to leisurely become a "pain reliever", as the name of a short story he wrote in 1963. Although writer Trang The Hy is no longer here, his works continue to be "pain relievers" for readers and the community. There is no doubt about a truth that is worthy of respect because of a cultural heritage: Trang The Hy's personality and works".
