"Comparing me with Chi Pu is lame"

After the rounds of the 2024 Wind Race, how did Suni Ha Linh receive the audience's compliments and criticisms?

When episode 1 of Dap Gio 2024 aired, it was also the first time I understood what public pressure was, so it took me time to adjust my mentality. When I read negative comments, I just tried my best to maintain a stable mentality.

Therefore, I learned to eliminate negative energy and replace it with more faith in myself and my teammates. However, I appreciate every opinion and suggestion from the audience because it is a motivation and lesson to help me improve myself.

"Vietnamese singer Suni's performance on a tightrope left the audience stunned and captured the hearts of many viewers with her sweet smile. Her fluent Chinese performance was even more surprising. She said she loves watching historical dramas and often watches them to learn Chinese," Sohu wrote about Suni Ha Linh in a review of the first episode of Dap Gio.

Do you feel sad when you are constantly compared to Chi Pu - Vietnam's representative last season?

It is understandable that people compare Suni and Chi Pu. But I don't feel hurt or pressured. I think that comparing me to Chi Pu or any other female artist is not the same, that comparison is lame.

Before coming to the competition, I not only watched Chi Pu's performances but also paid attention to the performances of other beauties in the program. I really liked the passionate eyes and fiery spirit that Chi Pu showed in each performance. That gave me more motivation to try harder. My biggest pressure now is to overcome the fear and obsession of the past.

What is that fear, can you tell me more?

Eight years ago, my parents did not support me even though my family had a tradition in the dance industry. They were afraid that I would have a hard time because they understood the nature of the profession. This was a psychological barrier for me for many years.

Later, when witnessing my daughter’s determination and achievements, my family changed their minds and supported me in many ways. There were times when I was so dependent on the decisions of those around me that I forgot who I really was or what I was striving for. Because of the fear of not being loved, I made inappropriate choices.

Therefore, I believe that Dap Gio 2024 will be a journey where the audience can witness my transformation. I clearly remember the feeling of standing on the stage of Dap Gio 2024 for the first time, when I was hanging high or falling from a height of 10m, I was not afraid of anything, on the contrary, I felt free and grateful.

Freedom to be myself, to bring here the most genuine, most passionate things. Determination to reach new heights, to bring to the audience everything I have and have nurtured after a long journey of working and pursuing art. And gratitude, because although I still have a lot to learn and improve, there are still many audiences and teammates around me who love me completely. In that moment, I felt like myself the most.

Never have a leisurely mentality

To have such performances, how do you and your crew prepare when "bringing the bell to strike in foreign lands"?

When it comes to work, I never have the mentality of playing around. When I accepted to represent Vietnam in such a big competition, my team and I had the mentality of going all out.

I received the invitation to participate in Dap Gio 2024 around December last year. At first, I was very happy, but there was a bit of pressure when the program shared that Suni Ha Linh would be the only guest face representing Vietnam this season. My team and I spent nearly two months thinking and considering before accepting.

That's why I only had a little over a week to prepare and come up with ideas for my first performance at this show. When I chose to perform the song "Just chill", I incorporated and was inspired by the fairy tale Tam Cam. The image of Tam falling from the areca tree and constantly "reviving" shows the strong, unyielding vitality of Vietnamese women. That is also the spirit I want to bring to the show. In the first meeting, many "big sisters" were impressed with my costume.

Working with a foreign crew and competing with many famous beauties, how much pressure do you feel?

I know Chinese and have worked with many foreign crews, so I did not encounter too many difficulties in the working and communication process. Instead, the biggest difficulty for me when participating in the reality show known as "China's toughest" was having cameras recording 24/7 and having to communicate with too many new people in a short time.

I am an introvert so I only feel comfortable when I am with familiar people. That is also the reason why I want to break out more when coming to Dap Gio. I hope this will be an opportunity for Suni to reach more audiences, to show off parts of my personality that I have never had the chance to show before and get closer to my dream of holding my first concert in my career.

Living in a house with beautiful women, what impressed you the most?

At first, I was quite pressured because I had to interact with many strangers. But after episode 1, I was lucky to be invited to join the team of Ha Khiet, Han Tuyet, Vinida, Yammy and Chau Duong Thanh. These were the first members that Suni met on the show. I was taken care of very well by the older sisters. In general, every beautiful sister has strengths for me to learn from.

In addition, I am also very impressed with the professionalism, diligence and coordination of the program crew.

What are your goals for Wind Race 2024?

My mindset for Dap Gio 2024 is to play my best to have the best performances. As for how far I can go, it is beyond my ability to decide.

For me, Dap Gio is not just a competition, it is also a place for me to improve what I already have from music, dance to foreign languages ​​and learn other performance skills so that the audience can see a new Suni Ha Linh, completely different from before.

In addition, my team and I also want to honor and promote Vietnamese culture through our performances at Dap Gio. Therefore, I set a goal for myself to be brave and try my best. In particular, I need to try my best to be resilient to overcome the busy schedule in a faraway country without losing heart.

Suni Ha Linh (real name Ngo Dang Thu Giang) was born in 1990 in Ho Chi Minh City. She was born into a family where her parents and older sister are both dancers. Her father is Ngo Dang Cuong - former Principal of Ho Chi Minh City Dance School.
