Afraid of surgery, man drinks black tea leaves, causing tumor to grow bigger

Taking his medical history, Mr. C. said that because he was afraid of surgery and complications, he did not go to the doctor or get treatment but instead sought out medicines of unknown origin. He bought black ginseng to boil water to drink every day, but the tumor did not dissolve but grew more and more over the course of 11 years.

Parotid gland tumors were detected on both sides.

Recently, the tumor grew larger, and his friends introduced him to see Master - Specialist Doctor 2 Doan Minh Trong (Head and Neck Unit, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City), an expert who has successfully performed many surgeries for parotid gland tumors.

On January 8, Master - Specialist Doctor 2 Doan Minh Trong said that at the Head and Neck Clinic, Mr. C. had an ultrasound, MRI and biopsy. The results showed that Mr. C. had parotid tumors on both sides, with the left tumor measuring 12cm and the right tumor measuring 3cm. Doctor Trong outlined a treatment plan and advised on surgery, and Mr. C. agreed.

Doctor Doan Minh Trong and the team of doctors from the Head, Face and Neck unit performed surgery on the patient. The doctor incised the skin, the tumor was 11 years old so it was tightly attached to the facial nerve and the parotid gland tissue. The team carefully and skillfully separated the thread-thin facial nerve from the giant tumor and the parotid gland tissue bit by bit. Then, they dissected the left parotid gland tumor. The team continued to dissect the right parotid gland tumor, cut off excess skin and performed cosmetic sutures. The surgery was successful after 2 hours.

After surgery, the long wound on both sides of the face was skillfully sutured, leaving no visible scars. Speaking, laughing, eating, drinking, etc. were all normal.

The doctor checked Mr. C's surgical wound.

Benign tumors can still cause facial paralysis if large in size.

Dr. Doan Minh Trong said that parotid tumors are the strong growth of cells leading to benign or malignant tumors, usually painless. The salivary glands in the body include: parotid, submandibular, sublingual and accessory glands in the oral cavity. Parotid tumors account for 80% of salivary gland tumors, of which 20% are malignant. Large benign tumors cause difficulty swallowing, compress the facial nerve leading to facial paralysis. Most parotid tumors, whether benign or malignant, require surgery. The extent of surgery will depend on the nature of the tumor and the doctor's recommendations.

Surgery for parotid tumors is complicated because the VII cranial nerve controls facial muscle movement. Surgical operations must be meticulous, precise, and preserve all five branches of the facial nerve. If the surgeon is not careful, it can easily cause a rupture, leading to facial paralysis, the patient cannot close his eyes, close his mouth, and express emotions.

According to Dr. Doan Minh Trong, there are many types of black tea in Vietnam, and inadequate research can easily lead to confusion during use, so patients need treatment instructions from medical staff before using black tea leaves to prevent and treat diseases. Research in the world on the treatment effectiveness of black tea is still on a small scale, especially there has been no research conducted on humans, so caution should be exercised when using it.

"People should not arbitrarily use leaves to treat tumors. When there is a tumor in the body, they should see a doctor for advice and effective treatment," the doctor advised.
