Ferrari 250 GTO supercar on display in New York
Fortune magazine reported on November 14 that a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO supercar was sold for $51.7 million (VND 1,260 billion) at an auction by RM Sotheby's in New York (USA).
The bright red car had been owned by an American collector for 38 years and was the second highest price ever paid. Previously, a Mercedes 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe was sold in Germany for $144 million in 2022.
The 250 GTO was sold on the evening of November 13 (local time) after a few minutes of bidding, but still at a price lower than the expected price of more than $60 million by RM Sotheby's, the luxury car auction subsidiary of Sotherby's. The auction house did not disclose the identity of the buyer.
Dating back to 1962, this legendary Scuderia sports car has a 4-liter engine that produces 390 horsepower, according to RM Sothby's.
The supercar finished second in the 1,000km endurance race on Germany's Nurburgring. The team had to retire from the 24 Hours of Le Mans due to engine failure.
After several years of racing in Italy, the car was sold to the United States in the late 1960s. Restored and modified, the Ferrari 250 GTO changed hands several times in the United States before ending up in the hands of an Ohio collector in 1985, who sold it at auction.
"This stunning Ferrari will provide its next caretaker with the pleasure of classic touring and racing, or displaying at major gatherings around the world," according to Sotherby's.
