Regarding the progress of the tunnel boring robot on the Nhon - Hanoi Railway Station Metro Line, the Urban Railway Project Management Board (MRB) said that the tunnel boring machine TBM 1 named "Than Toc" started drilling on July 30. By the end of August 23, this robot had dug about 78m from the station into the ground.

According to MRB, the tunneling speed depends on the surrounding geological properties as well as logistics factors, to minimize the impact on above-ground structures.

After digging 1.5m, the machine will stop to install the tunnel lining and then continue the cycle. All of these tunnel linings are manufactured at a factory in Ha Nam.

It is expected that after TBM1 has excavated 240m, TBM2, named "Bold", will start operating. At that time, both machines will operate in parallel. It is expected that the two TBMs will take about 16 months to complete the entire 4km underground tunnel.

The Nhon - Hanoi Railway Station urban railway project is one of the key national projects. Of which, the S9 Kim Ma underground station is the first underground station to be constructed in the capital and the second project in the country after the Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien underground metro line in Ho Chi Minh City.

The underground section of the Nhon - Hanoi Station Metro line will run through 4 stations from Cau Giay to Hanoi Station.

The pair of TBMs were specially designed for the urban railway project No. 3, Nhon - Hanoi station section. The machines were manufactured by Herrenkecht (Germany), are over 100m long, and weigh about 850 tons.

The two robots were named "Speed" and "Bold" to demonstrate the belief and aspiration of all MRB staff in accelerating the construction and early completion of the capital's urban railway system, despite many difficulties and challenges ahead.

After finishing drilling at station S12, the TBMs will be dismantled at this station, the auxiliary equipment system will be pulled back and dismantled at Station S9 - Kim Ma.

The total number of personnel for the construction work is more than 150 people. The main tasks include operating the TBM, operating the tunnel lining robot arm, replacing the cutting head, etc.

"Along the entire route, there are currently 6 buildings that must be demolished, and 42 buildings that must be temporarily housed for 1 month. The Board has completed the payment of compensation and temporary housing costs for households that are demolishing the first building that must be demolished according to plan. All households have signed the agreement and commitment to hand over the house according to the construction plan," informed the MRB leader.

Above ground, the project has designed and installed a geotechnical monitoring system to ensure regular monitoring and tracking of ground movement and subsidence. Below ground, the project has established a drainage system during the pushing phase.

In parallel with the construction of the tunnel using TBM, other construction items of the underground section (underground ramps, underground stations, garages and lane change roads) continue to be implemented in parallel according to plan.
