Dr. Sanomish Dashtsevel (Mongolia) emphasized in his speech at the international conference “Vietnam in the 20th century” held in Hanoi (September 2000) that: “The August Revolution created conditions for the Vietnamese people to become masters of the country, to achieve great achievements in the cause of defending the Fatherland and building the country. The August Revolution also had important significance for the national liberation and democratic movements in Asian countries and around the world .”
The August Revolution of 1945 was the first victory of Marxism-Leninism in a semi-feudal colonial country. The Revolution broke the shackles of French colonialism and Japanese fascism, overthrew the corrupt feudal monarchy in our country, and established the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (now the Socialist Republic of Vietnam), the first workers' and peasants' state in Southeast Asia. The August Revolution also marked the beginning of a new era, marking the boundary of the colonial era giving way to the era of decolonization.
Regarding the significance of the August Revolution in 1945, President Ho Chi Minh commented: “The August Revolution in 1945 was successful. It was the first victory of Marxism-Leninism in a semi-feudal colonial country. The Revolution broke the chains of French colonialism and Japanese fascism, overthrew the corrupt feudal monarchy in our country, and established the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, the first workers' and peasants' state in Southeast Asia.”
He commented: “That victory brought the Vietnamese people into a new era, an era of independence, freedom and socialism”. Therefore, he affirmed: “That was an extremely great change in the history of our country”.
Talking about the purpose of the August Revolution in 1945, President Ho Chi Minh clearly stated: “What is the purpose of the August Revolution? It is to regain peace, unity, independence and democracy for our Fatherland and our people. The August Revolution succeeded, on September 2 our country declared independence. The Democratic Republic of Vietnam was born. Free general elections were held, and the people of our country elected the National Assembly. The National Assembly passed the Constitution and elected the Central Government. Local governments from commune to province were elected by the people. So at that time we began to implement unity, independence and democracy.”
President Ho Chi Minh also commented: “The August Revolution had a direct and huge impact on the two friendly nations of Cambodia and Laos. The August Revolution succeeded, and the people of Cambodia and Laos rose up together to fight against imperialism and demand independence.”
Thomas Hodgkin, in his book “The World Talks About Vietnam”, assessed the August Revolution of 1945 in Vietnam as “the most important event in world history since the Russian October Revolution”. The author wrote: “It was a revolution led by the Communist Party, a party that had only been in existence for 15 years. It was the first revolution to succeed in overthrowing the colonial regime… Thus, the August Revolution marked the beginning of a new era, it marked the boundary of the colonial era giving way to the era of decolonization”.
The spirit of uprising, the great value and the precious lessons of the great August Revolution have inspired and fostered the strength of our entire Party, people and army to firmly step on the new path, continuing to write heroic pages in the cause of national liberation, building and defending the Fatherland. The victories of the resistance war against France (1945-1954), the resistance war against the US (1954-1975), the fight to defend the Fatherland at the southwestern border, the fight to defend the Fatherland at the northern border under the leadership of the Party have protected and developed the achievements of the August Revolution in 1945. As President Ho Chi Minh affirmed: "The purpose of the resistance war is to preserve and develop the victories of the August Revolution, that is, peace, unity, independence and democracy".
The 13th National Party Congress (2021) set the goal of turning Vietnam into a developed, high-income country on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, now the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (1945-2045).
Under the leadership of the Party, our country has achieved great, historic and comprehensive victories in politics, economy, culture, society, security, national defense, foreign affairs, Party building, building a socialist rule-of-law state... At the 2020 milestone, Vietnam was in the top 40 largest economies in the world. At the 2021 milestone, Vietnam was in the top 20 economies with the largest trade scale in the world. According to the announcement of the General Statistics Office, the Ministry of Planning and Investment, GDP per capita in 2022 is equivalent to 4,110 USD.

The above achievements are the crystallization of creativity, the result of a process of persistent and continuous efforts of the entire nation under the leadership of the Party to build a Vietnam with rich people, strong country, democracy, fairness and civilization./.
