Ready for spring

Việt NamViệt Nam08/01/2025

People of Yen Nguyen commune (Chiem Hoa) prepare the land for spring crop production.

Sufficient seeds and materials for production

The Xuan Van Commune Agricultural Supplies Store (Yen Son) under the distribution system of Tuyen Quang Agricultural Supplies and Seeds Joint Stock Company has all kinds of plant varieties including: corn, rice, fertilizers, and pesticides to supply spring crop production in localities. Mr. Dao Van Chien, the store owner, said: Serving the production of people in the commune and neighboring areas, in addition to the company's exclusive distribution of seeds, the store has imported 7 more rice varieties in the province's seed structure including: Thai Xuyen, Huong Uu 98, Nhi Uu, HMC2, Thai Binh... to meet the production needs of the people. Compared to 2023 and 2024, the prices of seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides remain unchanged.

At the seed and fertilizer store in Yen Nguyen commune (Chiem Hoa), rice, corn and other plant varieties have been gathered enough to meet the production needs of people in the area. According to the store owner, farmers in the area often plant earlier, so the store has imported and supplied seeds since the end of 2024. Currently, half of the seeds have been consumed, the remaining seeds are only short-term seeds imported by the dealer to prepare for the case of severe cold weather, causing damage to young seedlings, requiring additional planting.

According to the report of Tuyen Quang Agricultural Materials and Seeds Joint Stock Company, the company has prepared more than 1,000 tons of fertilizer imported into the warehouse, ready to supply to the company's stalls and agents across the localities to serve the production needs of the people.

Inspectors of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development inspected the market for seeds and materials in Yen Son town (Yen Son).

To meet the demand for nearly 18,000 hectares of rice for the spring-summer crop this year, the whole province needs nearly 1,000 tons of hybrid rice and purebred rice of all kinds. At this time, the market for seeds and fertilizer materials is relatively stable, with no shortage of goods or price fever. Some domestic seed production units have proactively produced many types of high-quality purebred and hybrid rice, which not only reduces dependence on imported seeds from China and India, but also contributes significantly to stabilizing the market and reducing input costs for farmers.

Ensure enough water for production

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the ENSO phenomenon (the overall state of both El Nino and La Nino) is in a neutral state and will continue to exist in the first 6 months of 2025, which means that drought is likely to occur throughout the spring crop production process. Through inspections by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, most reservoirs in the province have not yet stored enough water to serve production. The current average water storage in reservoirs is only about 60 - 70% of the total storage capacity, while in previous spring crops it was about 70 - 80%. Not to mention that this year, Tuyen Quang Hydropower Reservoir only released water twice, and the release time was also shorter than in previous years.

Faced with difficulties in water resources for production, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has issued a document requesting districts and cities to coordinate in organizing solutions to ensure water resources for agricultural production and drought prevention and control. Accordingly, localities should further strengthen water resource management; inspect and organize water conservation, economical use of water, and water storage in all irrigation works, especially in lakes and ponds, to have a proactive source of irrigation water to combat drought. At the same time, repair leaks in head dams; handle leaks in water intake valves and regulating sluices; repair damage, prepare adequate materials and fuel to prevent and control droughts; dredge suction tanks and discharge tanks and operate according to technical procedures to ensure that pumping stations operate safely and at their designed capacity. For pumping stations along the Lo and Gam rivers, the management boards of irrigation works at the grassroots level need to regularly monitor and closely follow the water discharge schedule on the mass media to focus on getting enough water for agricultural production. According to the plan, the water discharge schedule for production will start from 0:00 on January 12.

At this time, staff of the Management Board of Irrigation Works in localities located along both banks of the Lo River are concentrating human resources and machinery to repair and maintain pumping stations, water pipes, and canal systems to be ready to pump water for production when the hydroelectric reservoir releases water.

Water levels in reservoirs lower than the annual average will affect spring crop production.

Mr. Nguyen Ngan, Head of the Management Board of Vinh Loi Commune Irrigation Works (Son Duong), said: The historic flood of storm No. 3 damaged the entire pipeline system, burying the commune's water tank. To ensure the pumping, storing and regulating of water for spring crop production, in recent days, the board's staff have been repairing and maintaining the pumping system day and night, clearing all the water pipes and hiring excavators to dredge the amount of soil that buried the tank. After half a month of continuous work, the commune's irrigation system has been repaired and is ready to pump water for storage as soon as the hydroelectric reservoir releases the first batch of water - Mr. Ngan affirmed.

In Hoang Khai commune (Yen Son), the Irrigation Works Management and Exploitation Team has also completed the repair and maintenance of pumping stations and mobilized the maximum force of production teams to clear canals to facilitate the fastest and earliest water transfer to the fields. Mr. Luu Van Tai, Team Leader of the Hoang Khai Irrigation Works Management and Exploitation Team, said: This year, the difficulty is that the water level in the reservoir is lower than in previous years, only reaching 80% of the design capacity. Therefore, the team has calculated the most reasonable pumping and water regulation schedule for farmers to prepare the land and plant spring rice according to the schedule.

According to the recommendations of the agricultural sector, the 2025 spring crop will be cold and frosty and may appear later and weaker than the annual average, the number of days of cold and frosty weather will tend to be lower than the annual average. Therefore, farmers need to pay attention to the arrangement of the crop and the structure of the varieties to ensure that the rice ripens at a safe time, avoiding the effects of the last cold spell (Nang Ban cold). Limit the sowing of the main spring crop, mainly sowing in the late spring, focusing on planting after the beginning of spring (February 3). During the seedling stage, 100% of the seedling area must be covered with plastic properly to minimize damage caused by the weather.

All work for spring crop production has been prepared, to ensure a successful crop, farmers need to strictly follow the industry's recommendations: Use seeds in the province's seed structure, absolutely do not buy seeds of unknown origin, buy seeds online, the lesson of buying seeds online in the 2024 spring crop leading to total loss is still valid.
