The Khmer Times reported on March 7 that Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni appointed his sister, Norodom Arunrasmy, and Prince Sisowath Thomico as senators.

The appointment is in accordance with the Law on the Election of Senators, according to Senior Minister of the Royal Palace Kuy Sophal. He confirmed the decision, but said the king has not yet issued a related decree.

The election of the 5th National Assembly of Cambodia will take place on February 25. Senator Sok Eysan said the new Senate can officially begin its activities when the king convenes the first meeting of all newly elected members.

"The number of senators for this new term remains unchanged, but this new term has three opposition senators, while in the fourth term there were no members of the opposition," said Sok Eysan.

According to the official results announced by the National Election Committee (NEC) on March 5, the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) won 55 seats, the Khmer Will Party (KWP) had 3 seats, while the royalist Funcinpec and Khmer Power Party (KPP) did not win any seats, despite winning some votes.

The Senate consists of 62 members, of whom 58 are elected by commune councilors and members of the National Assembly, 2 are nominated by the National Assembly, and 2 are appointed by the king. According to the Senate Election Law, the king can appoint members of the royal family or high-ranking officials as senators at his discretion.

The senators nominated by the National Assembly are Mr. Sok Eysan and government adviser Heng Halim. Cambodian Senate spokesman Mam Bun Neang said that former CPP President and former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen will be the new Senate President, replacing Mr. Say Chhum.

Mr. Hun Sen (72 years old) is a senator from Region 3 of Kandal province. In August 2023, he was the one who issued the regulation to set the age limit for Senate election at 74.
