Ethiopians still especially favor the calendar passed down from their ancestors.

In Ethiopia, the year of Jesus Christ's birth is recognized as 7-8 years later than the Gregorian calendar (Western calendar), introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582.

Although most countries and territories in the world have adopted the Western calendar, Ethiopia still maintains its own way of calculating the calendar.

“We are unique. We have our own calendar, our own alphabet, and our own cultural traditions,” said Eshetu Getachew, CEO of Rotate Ethiopia Tours And Travel.

According to the Ethiopian calendar, a year is divided into 13 months, of which 12 months have 30 days. The last month has 5 days, or 6 days in a leap year.

Tourists visiting Ethiopia are often stunned by the feeling of “going back in time.” Many have expressed their shock on social media.

Another difference is that Ethiopia celebrates the new year on September 11 instead of January 1 like many other places. Culture Trip reports that "new year" in the local language is called Enkutatash, which means "gift of jewelry".

In addition to its unique way of calculating dates, Ethiopia is also the only country that uses a time system where the 12-hour clock is counted from sunrise to sunset and from sunset to sunrise.

That means that 0:00 in Ethiopia corresponds to 6:00 am in other countries. Mid-day is not 12:00 noon but 6:00 pm.

The way time is kept in this country can be confusing, especially for tourists.

“When I buy my plane tickets, the airlines use the Western calendar so I have to check three or four times to understand my time,” added an Ethiopian photographer.
