GĐXH - The patient was admitted to Ha Dong General Hospital with abdominal pain in the right iliac fossa, constipation, ulcerated mass in the artificial anus, foul smell, and discharge.
On November 14, information from Ha Dong General Hospital said that doctors from the Hospital's Department of Digestive Surgery had successfully performed surgery on a patient with intussusception - recurrent colon cancer and an artificial anus for 9 years.
Accordingly, female patient NTS (50 years old, in Chuong My, Hanoi) had a history of rectal tumor removal surgery to create an artificial anus 9 years ago. After surgery, the patient went for a follow-up examination and treatment at a hospital.
However, after that, listening to the advice of relatives and people around him not to close the colostomy, the patient did not go for a follow-up examination and carried the colostomy bag with him for many years.

The patient was brought to Ha Dong General Hospital by his family in a state of right iliac fossa abdominal pain, constipation, ulcerated mass in the artificial anus area, foul odor, and dirty discharge.
After testing and abdominal CT scan, the patient was diagnosed before surgery: Partial intestinal obstruction due to intussusception of the ileum - right colon - prolapse, colostomy tumor, monitoring for recurrent cancer/previous surgery to remove rectal tumor.
The patient was indicated for surgery to resolve the cause of intussusception, remove the colostomy tumor and close the colostomy.
Intraoperative injury causing intussusception was due to a tumor in the cecum area. The patient underwent surgery to remove the right colon and connect the right ileum, remove the left colon containing the colostomy and the tumor, and connect the left colon and the remaining rectum to the side with a circular anastomosis.
Both colon segments were removed for pathology and both showed adenocarcinoma – this patient’s case was quite special because the cancer was in two different parts of the digestive tract. After 4 hours of surgery, the patient was transferred to the recovery room for further monitoring.
Three days after the surgery, the patient was able to pass stool through his natural anus, had the anal catheter removed, and was given oral feeding. The patient was able to defecate through his natural anus after 9 years of wearing a colostomy bag.
On the 9th day after surgery, the patient was stable, ate well, had good bowel movements and was discharged from the hospital.
According to MSc. Dr. Nguyen Thi Duc, Department of Digestive Surgery, Ha Dong General Hospital, this is a very special case. The patient has been wearing an artificial anal bag for 9 years, greatly reducing her quality of life, causing economic damage due to having to buy an artificial anal bag, affecting the patient's daily work.
From this case, Dr. Duc recommends that post-operative follow-up visits according to the doctor's appointment schedule are extremely important. This helps patients receive advice from doctors with expertise and deep expertise to achieve high quality of life after surgery and avoid unfortunate consequences that may occur.
