Promoting the role of women in family and community economic development

Working together to find solutions to support the poor in economic development, promote initiative and promote the role of women are factors that help Thai Nguyen successfully implement the "National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction in 2024 and the period 2021-2025".

Women proactively rise up to escape poverty

With dynamic and creative approaches, Thai Nguyen has become one of the leading localities in implementing the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction. According to the report of the Thai Nguyen Provincial People's Committee, in the past time, the province has effectively deployed and implemented the "National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction in 2024 and the period 2021-2025". The most obvious result of the program is that in the province, the number of poor and near-poor households has decreased very rapidly. In 2021, according to statistics, the province still had 36,798 poor households, but by 2022, it had decreased to 26,869 households. Thai Nguyen province estimates that by the end of 2024, the number of poor households will decrease to 7,480 households, reaching a rate of 2.22%, down 0.8% compared to 2023; Near-poor households decreased to 8,740 households, reaching a rate of 2.59%, down 0.23% compared to 2023.

Ms. Hua Thi Chau Giang, Permanent Vice President of Thai Nguyen Women's Union, said: “This result is thanks to the drastic participation of the entire political system, ministries, branches, and organizations in Thai Nguyen province. All of them work together to implement and integrate programs and projects with the ultimate goal of achieving the highest efficiency. Besides support, the main factor is still how to promote women's initiative. Helping themselves and each other to develop the economy, many women in poor and disadvantaged areas in Thai Nguyen have done well, their economic lives have stabilized, they have escaped poverty, and they have also helped other women escape poverty.”

Thai Nguyen province has developed and had many policies suitable to local conditions and characteristics to support people to escape poverty, especially targeting women. Policies to support plant and animal varieties, combined with credit programs to eliminate hunger and reduce poverty, are implemented flexibly.

Raising free-range chickens brings economic efficiency, helping many women escape poverty.

The free-range chicken farming model is developing effectively, bringing stable income to households in Vo Nhai district, helping many households escape poverty. Ms. Lam Thi Anh's family (Hoa Binh commune, Vo Nhai district) was supported to implement a chicken farming project with 200 breeding chickens (70% supported). In addition to being supported with breeding chickens, Ms. Lam Thi Anh was also trained in farming skills, building large-scale barns, nutrition and disease prevention measures for chicken flocks. The provided chicken breed is resistant to weather, has few diseases, and delicious meat, especially young hens. After building a barn system, the chickens quickly grew and developed well, bringing income to the farmers.

13 households in Hoa Binh commune have benefited from the project, combining traditional chicken farming experience with advanced farming techniques and are achieving good results. According to statistics, in 2023, the number of poor and near-poor households in Hoa Binh commune was 103. In 2024, the number of poor and near-poor households decreased by 45 households, to only 58 households. Programs and efforts to eliminate poor and near-poor households in the commune are being implemented.

Continue to promote the implementation of the National Target Program on Sustainable Poverty Reduction

La Hien commune, Vo Nhai district, has 2,242 households with 8,625 people. Of which, the number of poor households in the commune is 68, accounting for 3.12%; near-poor households are 47, accounting for 2.15%. Developing traditional products and growing fruit trees suitable for the locality is the way to escape poverty. In La Hien commune, the program of planting and caring for custard apple trees according to VietGAP standards has been implemented. Custard apple trees have been grown locally for a long time but spontaneously, not according to standards, and not highly economically efficient. Ms. Bui Thi Tuat (Cay Bong hamlet, La Hien commune) has been supported with capital, tree varieties and trained in advanced custard apple growing techniques. With 3 hectares of well-developed custard apple trees, beautiful custard apples, safe quality, each year brings in an income of about 200 million VND. Thanks to custard apple trees and stable income from growing custard apples, life has improved and many households have escaped poverty.

In implementing the poverty reduction program, Thai Nguyen has had some creative ways. In Chua hamlet, Binh Long commune, Vo Nhai district, 10 poor households have received support from the model of expanding breeding cows. With a calf after a period of care, if it is a male calf, the people can sell it, if it is a female calf, it will be transferred to support other poor households. With this method, many poor households in Binh Long commune have risen out of poverty, and more meaningfully, they can help other households escape poverty.

In Vo Nhai and Dong Hy districts, many cooperatives and production groups led by women, with the majority of members being women, have been established. With these models, economic efficiency is replicated and spread to the whole community. At Tien Dien noodle and dry vermicelli cooperative (Trang Xa commune, Vo Nhai district), women have worked together and supported each other in production. Traditional local products have now expanded their markets, bringing good income to members.

To escape poverty, we must start with a change in women’s awareness and thinking, knowing how to be independent and rise up in life. Among the many projects under the National Target Program on Poverty Reduction being implemented in Thai Nguyen, women have become the center, rising up to escape poverty, for themselves, for their families and for the community.

The Thai Nguyen Provincial Bank for Social Policies has implemented a preferential credit program for poor and near-poor households to borrow preferential loans to develop production. One of the remaining difficulties is that many support projects require counterpart funds from the people, making it difficult to implement. In addition, through experience, Thai Nguyen province needs to continue to effectively carry out propaganda work in remote areas and mountainous ethnic minority areas, continue to direct specialized agencies to speed up the implementation of projects and sub-projects, build and replicate effective poverty reduction models, help people escape poverty sustainably, and mobilize resources for poverty reduction.
