On February 27, Binh Thuan Provincial Museum received a report from people in the sand dune area of Suoi Nuoc Quarter, Mui Ne Ward (Phan Thiet City) that while gardening, they accidentally discovered some traces of pottery fragments and stone tools suspected to be ancient objects.
Binh Thuan Provincial Museum coordinated with Mui Ne Antiquities Museum to send specialized staff to conduct archaeological investigations. Through inspection, it was confirmed that there were many pieces of rough and smooth pottery broken from objects such as jars, pots, bowls; there were also grinding tables, along with many ancient calcified shells in the cultural layer; the affected area was within a radius of 500m2 , with many pristine sand dunes.
According to the assessment and comparison of documents and artifacts on display at the Provincial Museum by professional staff, it was initially determined that this was a vestige of Sa Huynh culture, dating back 2,500 - 3,000 years ago, with a relatively thick cultural layer, capable of archaeological exploration for research and further archaeological excavation. This discovery marks the first time in Mui Ne that vestiges of Sa Huynh culture have been discovered, an important document in researching, displaying, and clarifying the scope of influence and spread of Sa Huynh culture in Binh Thuan.
