The investment brings together familiar investors like Thrive Capital and Khosla Ventures, along with Microsoft — OpenAI’s largest partner — and new participation from Nvidia. The funding round coincides with restructuring efforts and leadership changes at the company, including the abrupt departure of longtime CTO Mira Murati last week.

Other investors participating in the round include Altimeter Capital, Fidelity, SoftBank and Abu Dhabi's sovereign wealth fund MGX.
Thrive Capital has committed $1.2 billion, with the option to invest another $1 billion next year if OpenAI hits its revenue targets. Apple was in discussions to invest in OpenAI but ultimately did not participate, according to sources.
Despite the personnel changes, investors remain optimistic, based on CEO Sam Altman’s growth projections. The company is expected to generate $3.6 billion in revenue this year, despite a loss of more than $5 billion. Next year, OpenAI expects revenue to rise to $11.6 billion.
OpenAI’s rapid growth since launching ChatGPT has attracted global attention, with 250 million weekly active users. The company’s valuation has increased from $14 billion in 2021 to $157 billion, far exceeding Altman’s previous predictions.
The company also announced that it is still pursuing the goal of developing artificial general intelligence (AGI), an AI system capable of surpassing human intelligence, while pushing forward with commercialization and trying to achieve profitability.
