CNN reported on November 5 that Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump had an equal number of votes in a small town in New Hampshire, one of the first places to have results and kick off the US presidential election day nationwide.
The town of Dixville Notch, located near the Canadian border on the northern tip of New Hampshire, opened and closed its polls just after midnight local time, a tradition that dates back to 1960.
Four Republicans and two unaffiliated voters participated, with Harris and Trump each receiving three votes.
While the Dixville Notch results don't always predict the eventual winner or even the state's pick, the results here do hold some interest for those eager to get a heads-up on the day's other results.
Traditionally, all eligible voters gather at the Balsams Hotel in Dixville Notch to cast their ballots in secret, after polls open at midnight.
Once all the ballots are cast, they are counted and the results are announced, hours before anywhere else, often filling the polls with more reporters than voters at election time.
Les Otten, one of the town's voters and a major investor in the Balsams Hotel, said the early announcement of the results was "a civics lesson for the country".
“If we can help people get out and understand that voting is an important part of their rights as American citizens, then that's probably the key to what we're doing,” he said.
Dixville Notch voters have backed the Democratic candidate in the last two presidential elections, with the town unanimously voting five times for President Joe Biden in 2020. Previously, Hillary Clinton won four of the seven votes in 2016, with two votes for Trump and one for Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson.
