US President Donald Trump announced on February 4 that he wants to close the US Department of Education by executive order, leaving it up to states to manage schools themselves.
Trump disappointed with American education
"We spend more money per student than any country in the world, but we're at the bottom of the rankings. We're very bad. What I want to do is let the states run their schools," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.
Mr. Trump has said he wants to be able to close the Department of Education with an executive order. However, Congress would need to pass legislation to close the department.
The US president also mentioned working with Congress and teachers unions to make these changes.
The Trump administration will take steps to cut funding for the Department of Education and could announce planned actions later this month, a White House official said on February 3.
The budget cuts are likely part of an effort by the Government Performance Board, headed by billionaire Elon Musk, to identify fraud and wasteful government spending.
Republicans have criticized the Department of Education under President Joe Biden, particularly over student debt relief and policies related to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).
President Trump has issued executive orders to dismantle DEI programs across the federal government.
More than 20,000 US government employees are ready to quit their jobs
According to Reuters, information from a US official revealed that more than 20,000 federal employees have announced their readiness to resign as part of a financial support program to reduce the size of the apparatus. The number will continue to increase before the deadline on February 6.
Last week, the White House proposed paying salaries and benefits through September 30 in a bid to force 2 million workers to resign.
The program has been called illegal by some Democrats, but the White House Office of Personnel Management has defended its legality.
The program encourages civil servants to resign for opportunities in the private sector, but some have expressed opposition.
President Donald Trump has embarked on a major overhaul of the US government, initially firing and eliminating hundreds of officials in a bid to streamline the apparatus and appoint more loyalists.
