(Dan Tri) - The US special envoy in charge of Ukraine and Russia said that sanctions against Russia are currently only at level 3 on a scale of 10 in terms of the level of damage to the economy.
US President Donald Trump's special envoy for Russia and Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, said on February 6 that the US administration considers the current sanctions against Russia to be insufficient and "only at level 3" on a scale of 10. He added that Washington is considering the possibility of tightening sanctions on Russia's energy sector.
“We can really tighten the sanctions, especially on oil production and exports. It would have a huge impact to create something,” Mr. Kellogg told the New York Post .
The US and its European allies have stepped up sanctions against Russia after Moscow annexed the Crimean peninsula in 2014.
On January 10, more than a week before the end of his term, the administration of former US President Joe Biden announced a large-scale package of sanctions against Russia's oil and gas industry.
The sanctions apply to Russian companies Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegas, Gazprom's Portovaya and the Vysotsk LNG facilities operated by Novatek. In addition, 183 tankers, traders, oilfield service companies, executives of several oil companies and representatives of the Russian Energy Ministry were also included in the list.
Previously, Mr. Trump also affirmed that he would not rule out the possibility of tightening sanctions on Russia unless Moscow agreed to negotiate to resolve the problem in Ukraine. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin has set conditions for resolving the situation in Ukraine, including Ukraine withdrawing its troops from Donbass and Novorossiya, and abandoning plans to join NATO.
