On August 29, former President Donald Trump announced that he would make in vitro fertilization (IVF) services free if he wins the election in November.

NBC News reported that speaking at a campaign rally in Potterville, Michigan, Mr. Trump said that if elected President, he would protect access to IVF and would let the government or require insurance companies to cover the cost for "all Americans in need."

However, he did not give details on how his proposal would be implemented.

The former president also pledged that, if he wins the next election, new parents will have the opportunity to reduce their tax bills by deducting major expenses related to their newborns.

The Republican candidate stressed that this demonstrates his commitment to supporting American families.

Reproductive rights were a major weakness for former President Trump, whose campaign largely avoided issues related to abortion and reproductive rights, as his anti-abortion platform has been unpopular with voters since the ruling guaranteeing abortion rights was overturned two years ago.

Democrats have repeatedly criticized Mr. Trump for this, after three Supreme Court justices appointed by him were among the six out of nine judges who voted to abolish abortion rights, thereby allowing states to decide at their discretion whether to ban or permit it.

Mr Trump’s vulnerability was further exposed after an Alabama court ruled in February that frozen embryos and IVF-fertilized eggs are legally considered human beings and anyone who destroys them could be held liable.

Mr Trump later declared his support for IVF after some clinics postponed carrying out the procedure following a court ruling in Alabama.

Experts say the Supreme Court's 2022 ruling essentially gave states the final say on abortion issues, paving the way for far-reaching implications for other areas of reproductive health, including IVF.

Few Americans have insurance plans that cover fertility treatments, while the cost of $20,000 or more for an 18-month IVF treatment is financially out of reach for many.

Regarding the election poll results, on the same day, according to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), a poll conducted by this newspaper showed that American voters basically have a positive assessment of Vice President Kamala Harris. This Democratic candidate is currently leading his Republican opponent Donald Trump, although the gap is narrow.

Accordingly, Ms. Harris received the support of 48% of voters, while the number for Mr. Trump was 47%. In another poll with the participation of independent and third-party candidates, Ms. Harris's lead over Mr. Trump was wider, with a support rate of 47%-45%.

This is the first time the Democratic candidate has led Mr. Trump in the WSJ poll since the newspaper began conducting it in April this year.

The latest poll was conducted by the WSJ among 1,500 registered voters from August 24-28, after the Democratic National Convention ended. The WSJ noted that the margin of error for the survey is 2.5 percentage points.

Meanwhile, a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on August 29 showed that Vice President Harris is leading former President Trump by 45%-41%, showing a widening gap between the two candidates.
