Russia

Russian President Vladimir Putin is on an official visit to Mongolia. This is his first visit to the Central Asian country in five years.

The Russian leader arrived in the neighboring country on the evening of September 2 (local time) at the invitation of Mongolian leader, Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh made at a meeting in Beijing last fall.

Like five years ago, the Russian President will attend the celebrations marking the joint victory of the Soviet and Mongolian armies on the Khalkhin Gol River. In addition, he will hold substantive talks and a number of bilateral meetings. His visit will end with a grand reception.

During the talks, the two leaders will discuss "prospects for further development of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Russia and Mongolia and exchange views on current international and regional issues," the Kremlin said.

Mr. Putin is also expected to meet with Chairman of the Mongolian State Great Khural Dashzegve Amarbayasgalan and Mongolian Prime Minister Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene. Important bilateral documents will be signed at the end of the visit.

The issue of Mr Putin's foreign travel has been in the spotlight since the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for the Russian president last March on charges of illegally taking hundreds of children from Ukraine - an accusation Moscow has denied.

Mongolia is a signatory to the Rome Statute establishing the ICC, and the visit to the capital Ulaanbaatar is the Russian leader's first trip to an ICC member state since the arrest warrant was issued. However, the Kremlin said on August 30 that it was "not worried" about the upcoming trip: "We had a great dialogue with our friends from Mongolia."

On September 2, during a visit to the Peter the Great Military Academy of the Strategic Missile Forces, Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov said that success on the modern battlefield is achieved through the use of the latest weapons and robots.

“Today, success on the battlefield is achieved through the use of the latest weapons and the active use of robotics. A reliable communication and control system and the continuous improvement of the control system through steps such as the use of artificial intelligence and digital technologies play an important role,” Belousov told the students of the university on the occasion of the new academic year.

Ukraine

The Ukrainian Air Force said that early on September 2, Russia launched a series of drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles at Kiev. Accordingly, a series of explosions shook the Ukrainian capital, forcing people to take bomb shelters.

Emergency services were called to the Holosiivskyi and Solomianskyi districts of Kiev, according to Kiev Mayor Vitalii Klitschko. One person is believed to have been injured by falling debris in the Shevchenkivskyi district, Klitschko said.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia fired several cruise missiles, ballistic missiles and several drones targeting Kiev.

Serhii Popko, head of the Kiev city military administration, said more than 10 cruise missiles, about 10 ballistic missiles and a drone fired at the Ukrainian capital and its suburbs were destroyed by Ukraine's air defense systems.

An explosion also occurred in Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, according to Ukrainian media. Oleh Syniehubov, head of the Kharkiv region, confirmed the attack early on September 2 in the Industrialnyi district of Kharkiv and said it set a residential building and several other buildings on fire.

America

The US has just confiscated the plane of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro parked in the Dominican Republic, CNN reported on September 2, citing US officials.

Officials said Washington determined that Venezuela's purchase of the plane violated US sanctions. The US flew the plane to Florida on September 2, according to CNN.

The plane, a Dassault Falcon 900EX, worth about $13 million, has been in the Dominican Republic in recent months. US officials have described the plane as Venezuela’s version of “Air Force One,” and it has been photographed during Mr. Maduro’s previous state visits around the world.

"Seizing a foreign head of state's private jet is unprecedented in criminal matters. We are sending a clear message here that... no one is beyond the reach of US sanctions," one of the US officials told CNN.

The seizure of the plane marks an escalation in the already frosty relationship between the US and Venezuela, CNN reported. In a statement on September 2, the Venezuelan government described the seizure of the plane as "piracy."

Israel

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned Hamas of a heavy price to pay for the killing of six Israeli hostages in the Gaza Strip. "Israel will not tolerate this and will not forget this. Hamas will pay a heavy price," he said.

The Israeli prime minister has sent condolences to the families of the slain hostages and stressed that Israel is fighting for survival and must be united.

Earlier, on August 31, the Israeli army found the bodies of six Israeli hostages in an underground tunnel near the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. Hamas claimed that the hostages died in an Israeli bombardment, but IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari said on September 1 that forensic examinations indicated that they were shot dead shortly before the Israeli army arrived in the area.

To increase pressure on Prime Minister Netanyahu to reach an immediate ceasefire and prisoner exchange deal with Hamas, a nationwide strike led by the Histadrut union took place on September 2, and quickly spread.

According to Israel's public broadcaster KAN, nearly 770,000 Israelis took to the streets in cities like Tel Aviv, demanding immediate government action. In response, the Israeli government filed a petition with the Supreme Court to cancel the strike, according to Haaretz.

Israel estimates that more than 100 hostages are still being held by Hamas in Gaza, some of whom are believed to have been murdered.

Thailand

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said on September 2 that members of her new Cabinet have been chosen and will be submitted for royal approval this week.

Senior officials in her interim government have previously said that a new government would be formed by mid-September. The new cabinet is expected to retain the current finance and foreign ministers, but could have 11 new ministers and deputy ministers, according to local media reports citing unnamed sources.

Sorawong Thienthong, secretary-general of Ms Paetongtarn's ruling Pheu Thai Party, told Reuters the new government would have slightly more seats in parliament than the previous government. He declined to comment on the new cabinet line-up.

After Srettha Thavisin was dismissed as prime minister less than a month ago by court order, the populist Pheu Thai Party quickly rallied support for its young leader Paetongtarn, 38. She was approved by the Thai parliament in a vote a few days later.

Ms. Paetongtarn, the youngest daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, is Thailand's youngest Prime Minister and the second woman and fourth member of the Shinawatra family to hold the position.
