Former US President Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, will add two former Democrats, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Tulsi Gabbard, to his presidential transition team.
The New York Times on August 28 quoted a senior campaign adviser as saying that Donald Trump plans to appoint his former rival, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and Tulsi Gabbard, a former Democrat, as honorary co-chairs of the presidential transition team. This group will help Trump choose policies and personnel.
The move is seen as a boost to voters in a tight race with Vice President Kamala Harris, and a sign that support for Mr Trump is widening across both parties.
However, public opinion believes that by bringing Mr. Kennedy Jr., a person known for his vaccine skepticism, and Ms. Gabbard, who has been dissatisfied with the US Government, into the power transition team, Mr. Trump risks facing criticism for supporting figures with extreme views in his efforts to return to power.
Both Mr. Kennedy and Ms. Gabbard spent much of their political lives as progressive Democrats.
Mr Kennedy ended his independent presidential campaign and endorsed Mr Trump. Just four months ago, Mr Trump called Mr Kennedy a “radical leftist lunatic”.
Gabbard, a former Hawaii congresswoman, ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020 before dropping out and endorsing Joe Biden. However, in 2022, she announced that she would leave the Democratic Party, citing among other reasons that the party promoted “anti-white racism.”
