QUANG NINH On an area of over 400m2, Ha Long Green Organic Agriculture Cooperative currently produces 10 tons of various types of vermicompost per month with a selling price of 8,000 VND/kg.
Currently, the demand for organic fertilizers in Quang Ninh province is gradually increasing. Realizing that, in October 2023, Ms. Nguyen Thi Vinh (Cam La commune, Quang Yen town) established the Green Ha Long Organic Agriculture Cooperative, of which she is the Director.
Ms. Vinh shared that through practical research, it shows that the situation of farmers not following the principles when using chemical fertilizers and pesticides is still happening, causing waste, environmental pollution, and directly affecting human health.

"The cooperative was established with the goal of helping farmers change their awareness and farming methods in agricultural production, contributing to protecting the natural environment and public health. Ha Long Green Organic Agriculture Cooperative is focusing on producing vermicompost and vermicompost products," said Ms. Vinh.
Notably, vermicompost is not only a high-quality organic fertilizer for plants, but also helps improve degraded, nutrient-deficient soil. Vermicompost is especially suitable for growing seedlings, growing organic vegetables, tubers, and fruits. The vermicompost composting process can be carried out on a small scale to treat organic waste in households.
"Although vermicompost cannot completely replace chemical fertilizers, it can reduce the amount of chemical fertilizers, promote sustainable agricultural production, bring high-quality agricultural products, and ensure safety for consumers," Ms. Vinh shared.
Currently, the Green Ha Long Organic Agriculture Cooperative is using hybrid earthworms because they are large in size, eat well and produce higher-yielding fertilizer. In addition, hybrid earthworms are suitable for the local environment and climate and have good disease resistance.
Earthworms' food is very diverse, such as livestock and poultry manure; residues of plants such as cassava, beans, sugarcane, and arrowroot; plants such as water hyacinth, banana tree trunks, etc.; organic waste from the kitchen. However, before feeding earthworms, these foods need to be crushed, food of plant origin should be fed directly, and food of animal origin must be mixed with probiotics.

Worms should be fed floating on the surface, avoid feeding them submerged because the submerged food mass will generate heat when fermented, affecting the growth and reproduction of worms. On the other hand, the submerged environment creates anaerobic conditions, generating a series of toxic gases such as CH4, H2S, CO, causing worms to leave or die.
After the first release of the seeds, about 40 - 45 days, when the biomass layer is thick, farmers can collect vermicompost and combine it with leveling the herd. On an area of over 400m2, Ha Long Green Organic Agriculture Cooperative currently produces 10 tons of various types of vermicompost per month with a selling price of 8,000 VND/kg. The Cooperative has built satellite farms in Quang Yen and Dong Trieu towns, and is planning to develop more in Hai Ha and Binh Lieu districts.
In the coming time, the Cooperative will develop other products such as vermicompost, vermicompost seeds, frozen vermicompost, etc., increasing the vermicompost output sold to the market to 30 tons/month to supply the cultivation sector in the province.
Mr. Tran Van Thuc, Head of the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection of Quang Ninh province, said that vermicompost has the effect of increasing the absorption of nutrients, increasing the immunity of plants; contains many microorganisms, making the soil loose and moist; and regulating growth naturally.
"The earthworm farming model is suitable for the current trend of organic agricultural development. Besides, it helps people increase their income and at the same time encourages the development of circular agriculture in Quang Ninh province," Mr. Thuc emphasized.
