Sacred mountain with 'strangling' banyan tree in Di Linh plateau

VnExpressVnExpress18/05/2023

Lam Dong Brah Yang Mountain in Di Linh plateau is honored as the residence of the gods, has a primeval forest with "strangling" banyan trees because they easily parasitize and suck the host tree to death.

Brăh Yàng in Ka La village, Bao Thuan commune, is the highest mountain in Di Linh district, Lam Dong, located 1,879 m above sea level. Surrounded by primeval forests, overlapping rocky mountains and clear streams.

The mountain is closely associated with the lifestyle of the K'Ho Sre people in the Di Linh plateau. Mr. Nhoi Mur, a K'Ho Sre living in Lien Dam commune, said that Brăh Yang mountain is associated with the story of a young man named Brah who married a fairy on the mountain and became Brăh Yang (god Brah). In the local language, Brăh Yang means the abode of the god (Yàng), with a sacred meaning. Local people believe that Brăh Yang is the god of health who can subdue wild animals and protect humans and all things. To reach the top of this sacred mountain requires faith, endurance and physical strength.

The way to the top of the mountain is only a trail with successive steep slopes. To reach the top of Brăh Yàng, visitors must cross coffee plantations cultivated on steep slopes, interspersed with rocks and grass.

Ms. Minh Thy, living in Ho Chi Minh City, came to Di Linh in April to learn more about Mother Nature but "did not dare to conquer" Brăh Yang Mountain. Although she has experience climbing mountains, under the harsh sunlight of the plateau, the coffee trees along the way to the top of Brăh Yang were not enough to provide shade, making her quickly "breathless and sweating profusely".

After crossing the fields and pine forests, she arrived at a primeval forest with a series of tall, shady trees. The vegetation in the primeval forest is diverse, from shrubs growing in between tangled clumps of thorns to ancient trees that require dozens of people to hug around.

Around the primeval forest, there are many "strangling" banyan trees. This type of tree has a strong root system, growing higher than a person's head, creating caves that can be used for shelter. Mr. Nhoi Mur said that this type of tree lives symbiotically on the trunk of an ancient tree. The seeds grow roots that cling to the host tree, absorbing moisture and nutrients on the surface of the bark. Gradually, the parasitic tree grows above the top of the host tree to receive sunlight. The root system becomes stronger and stronger, clinging tightly to the trunk of the host tree, following the trunk and gradually sinking into the ground. When the roots grow strongly, they will turn into wood and gradually strangle the host tree.

Through the primeval forest is the sacred well area, where tourists climbing Brăh Yàng mountain rest and camp overnight. Locals consider this a sacred well because the water source never runs out. According to legend, when Brăh followed the fairies up the mountain, the mountain god gave him water from this well to wash his face. As soon as he finished washing, his face brightened and he suddenly saw ancient longhouses in the middle of the forest. From then on, Brăh stayed here with the mountain god's daughter and became the god Brăh, also known as Brăh Yàng.

Ms. Minh Thy said that unlike her initial imagination, the well is shallow and you can see the bottom. "Strangely, the water in the well never runs out, and the mouth of the well is not covered by grass and trees," said the female tourist.

The indigenous people consider going into the forest and climbing mountains as a trip to visit their grandparents and ancestors, so they must be respectful. Tourists visiting the sacred mountain of Brah Yang are always advised by the K'Ho guides not to swear or use foul language.

K'Breoh, a local porter in Brăh Yàng, said that tourists can come here all year round. Trekking trips usually last 3 days and 2 nights, with an average level of challenge. In addition to enjoying the beautiful mountain scenery, tourists can experience SUP paddling, camping by Kala Lake, and experiencing the life of the K'Ho people in Di Linh.
