Net house model on Que land

After many missed appointments with Mr. Mac Van Tuat - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Que Phong district, this time, we had the opportunity to be led by him to visit the vegetable growing model in a greenhouse of a farmer in Hong Phong block, Kim Son town. Talking to us, farmer Pham Van Ba - the owner of the greenhouse enthusiastically told us about the path to making a living in this land.

Born and raised in a hometown with a tradition of intensive vegetable farming in Dien Thanh commune, Dien Chau district, Mr. Pham Van Ba started a business in Kim Son town in 2002. Coming to the new land of Phu Quy, he realized that if there was land to grow vegetables, tubers, and fruits for sale, it would be convenient, because in this mountainous area, most of the green vegetables are transported from the lowlands. And he decided to contract 5,000 m2 of agricultural land to grow vegetables.

The land that Mr. Ba contracted was mostly ponds and mounds. To have a favorable surface for vegetable production, he had to invest in renting a bulldozer, adding more fertile soil, etc. After improving the land, he focused on growing vegetables, tubers, and fruits that the market needed, such as cucumbers, green beans, eggplants, chili peppers, and herbs.

With the experience gained from being a farmer specializing in vegetable production in Dien Thanh area, along with the diligence and hard work of the couple, the once poor land has now grown lush green vegetables. Each season has its own produce, and every day there are products for sale on the market. The work is increasingly favorable, the income is stable, there are savings, in early 2023, with enthusiastic guidance from farmers' associations at all levels, along with the support policies of the State, Mr. Ba and his wife decided to invest over 200 million VND to build a greenhouse with an area of 1,000 m2.

The entire area in the greenhouse is equipped with a drip irrigation system, along with 3 adjacent ponds and lakes, combined with year-round fish farming, ensuring an abundant source of irrigation water. In the hot summer, but thanks to the investment in generators and a complete pumping system, the greenhouse area is always watered sufficiently, and the plants are green and flourishing. At the beginning of the year, he planted melons, followed by tomatoes, cucumbers, and various vegetables, all of which brought high income. He is currently experimenting with growing strawberries in the greenhouse, with initial good growth.

Calculations show that in 2023, Mr. Ba's family will have a revenue of 150 million VND, after deducting expenses, the profit is more than 60 million VND, not to mention the vegetables, tubers, and fruits grown outdoors traditionally also bring in a significant income. "Realizing that producing vegetables, tubers, and fruits in greenhouses brings high economic efficiency, the family is planning to invest in building another greenhouse. Producing vegetables in greenhouses has the advantage of fully automatic watering, less care, preventing damage from insects, limiting pests, and not being adversely affected by weather such as hail, storms, etc.

In addition, because no chemical pesticides are used, agricultural products are of good quality and safe, and are sold out as soon as they are grown. However, the downside is that in the summer, the temperature in the greenhouse is high, so proper care is required,” said Mr. Pham Van Ba.

Changing production thinking

Mr. Mac Van Tuat - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Que Phong district said: Growing vegetables, tubers and fruits in greenhouses has been applied by people in lowland districts for many years, but in the border district of Que Phong, it has only begun since 2023. Up to now, people in the district have mainly practiced traditional agricultural production, with low productivity and low economic efficiency.

Since early 2023, some households in the district have boldly invested in greenhouses. Although the construction costs are high, production is more professional. Currently, there are 4 farming households in the district investing in greenhouses, including: 2 greenhouses in Tien Phong commune, 1 greenhouse in Kim Son town area and 1 greenhouse in Nam Giai commune. These farming households all have economic conditions, passion and experience in agricultural production, and are willing to learn, so these greenhouse models are all effective.

The production of crops in greenhouses by farmers aims to increase the application of high technology in agricultural production, apply biological measures, do not use chemical pesticides, aim for clean agricultural production, reduce costs, protect health and protect the environment.
“The special feature of Que Phong district is that it has many sub-climate regions, in which many highland communes have cool temperatures in the summer such as Tri Le, Nam Giai... suitable for vegetable production in greenhouses, along with the conditions of abundant labor force, large land area, especially the district is encouraging the expansion of greenhouse production models. Therefore, in the future, the District Farmers' Association will continue to propagate and guide farmers to invest in building greenhouses.

When households build greenhouses, in addition to the support policy of the Provincial People's Committee according to Resolution No. 18/2021/NQ-HDND of the province, the District People's Committee also supports each model with 50 million VND. Effective greenhouse production models in the area are a driving force for ethnic minorities in the district to learn and follow.

Mr. Mac Van Tuat - Chairman of Que Phong District Farmers' Association

Not only Que Phong district, but also farmers in other mountainous districts such as Quy Hop, Nghia Dan, Tan Ky, Anh Son, Con Cuong... have invested in building greenhouses to produce vegetables, tubers, and fruits of all kinds in recent years, bringing high economic efficiency. The production of vegetables, tubers, and fruits in greenhouses aims to take advantage of the State's support policies, gradually changing people's thinking about production and use of safe vegetables. This is also the actual need of consumers who are moving towards using fresh vegetables and fruits of clear origin./.
