Quickly restore the herd

Ms. Nguyen Thi Oanh in Tan Lap village, Hoang Hoa Tham commune (Chi Linh) was lucky to have just finished selling her chickens when storm No. 3 hit. Ms. Oanh said: "Right after storm No. 3, I mobilized my family members to clean up the farming area, clear fallen trees, rebuild fences, tile roofs, and spray disinfectants on the entire barn and farming area to restock for the end of the year." Currently, Ms. Oanh's family has finished repairing the barns affected by the storm and has just imported over 3,500 chickens to sell at the end of the year. With the current stable chicken price of 53,000 - 54,000 VND/kg, she can earn a profit of 10 - 15 million VND/1,000 chickens.

It is expected that at the end of the year, the supply of Chi Linh hill chicken to the market will still be abundant.

Hoang Hoa Tham Commune is one of the localities with a large flock of hill chickens in Chi Linh City. The commune also suffered heavy damage from storm No. 3, with over 80% of its 1,200 farms and livestock farms damaged. "In addition to calculating the damage, the local government has coordinated with agricultural extension workers to actively support and guide farmers in disinfecting barns and livestock care techniques after the storm, and only restock when the farming environment is safe," said Ms. Tran Bich Thuan, Chairwoman of Hoang Hoa Tham Commune People's Committee. According to Ms. Thuan, farm and livestock owners have repaired and reinforced barns and imported new flocks to serve the year-end market. The locality has more than 100 households raising over 500,000 hill chickens.

Chi Linh City currently has about 3 million hill chickens, the locality with the largest poultry flock in Hai Duong. Ms. Diep Thi Thu, Director of Chi Linh City Agricultural Service Center shared: "With a safe and good quality breeding process, "Chi Linh Hill Chicken" will continue to be welcomed by consumers, especially at the end of the year".

Pork is an important daily food source, especially at the end of the year when demand is even higher. Pig farming was also affected by storm No. 3, but many farm owners affirmed that they "are not worried about a shortage of supply". According to farmers, farms are now starting to restore their herds for the end of the year.

Ms. Pham Thi May in Kim Doi village, Cam Hoang commune (Cam Giang) has a farm raising more than 2,000 pigs and 250 sows. She said that storm No. 3 blew off the roofs of many rows of barns in her house, but her family quickly repaired them to ensure farming conditions. Her farm has just been renovated and disinfected to restore the herd. It is expected that the farm will sell 600 pigs to serve the year-end market. "Near Tet, pork prices are often higher than usual. This is also the time that farmers calculate and look forward to the most in the year. Therefore, if not affected by the epidemic, the supply of pork will be abundant," Ms. May said.

New vegetable season

Farmers in Hung Dao commune (Tu Ky) grow early kohlrabi to serve the year-end market.

At this time in previous years, farmers in Hung Dao commune (Tu Ky) were preparing to harvest the first crop of early winter vegetables. This year is different, storm No. 3 damaged most of the extremely early winter vegetable area and vegetable seeds. However, because the winter crop is the most valuable crop of the year, farmers did not miss the opportunity and quickly started to restore production.

Taking advantage of the sunny weather, Mr. Nguyen Van Luong in O Me village has re-cultivated the land in time to plant a new crop of vegetables. According to Mr. Luong, if he plants now, he will miss a very early crop of winter vegetables, but he will not worry about a shortage of vegetables at the end of the year. Normally, from the beginning of October onwards, the weather is basically favorable for winter vegetables to grow and develop, especially near Tet.

Gia Loc district has the second largest winter crop area in the province (after Kinh Mon town) with 2,900 hectares, accounting for 13.4% of the province's winter crop area. Among them, there are many areas specializing in growing kohlrabi, cabbage, and cauliflower concentrated in the communes of Gia Luong, Gia Khanh, Hoang Dieu, Toan Thang, Le Loi, etc. Currently, farmers in the district are also focusing on restoring the winter crop area.

Gia Khanh commune has about 60 hectares of winter vegetables. Storm No. 3 damaged about 90% of the extremely early winter vegetable area. Having missed the extremely early winter crop, Gia Khanh farmers have proactively changed their crop structure to suit the market. Instead of specializing in one area of cabbage as before, farmers have chosen to diversify their crops from corn, kohlrabi and some short-term leafy vegetables. According to a representative of Gia Khanh Commune Agricultural Service Cooperative, normally the source of green vegetables is only scarce during storms and floods, but after that the supply gradually becomes abundant again. Especially at the end of the year, the supply is expected to be abundant because many households replant at the same time. Therefore, instead of planting all at once, Gia Khanh commune farmers spread out the crops to avoid harvest pressure.

Potential shortage of bananas and grapefruit for Tet

More than 200 hectares of grapefruit in Thanh Hong commune were severely damaged by storm No. 3.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, storm No. 3 caused about 2,000 hectares of vegetables to be flooded and crushed, 3,500 hectares of fruit trees to be broken, 2,669 livestock and 941,085 poultry to die. The estimated economic damage to the agricultural and rural development sector is about 2,130 billion VND. Immediately after the storm, the agricultural sector provided many instructions and support to farmers to overcome difficulties to quickly stabilize production.

Although most food sources will be abundant again by the end of the year, some other agricultural products used for Tet altar decoration such as grapefruit and bananas may be in short supply if additional supplies cannot be found from other localities. Storm No. 3 has damaged many areas of grapefruit and banana plantations of farmers in the province, making it impossible to recover and generate income this year.

Most of the banana growing areas in Hai Duong were destroyed by storm No. 3.

Thanh Khe Commune (Thanh Ha) is famous for bananas sold during Tet, but due to the impact of storm No. 3, the entire banana growing area was destroyed. Ms. Hoang Thi Lap, Xuan An village, said sadly: "No storm has caused banana growers to lose everything like storm No. 3. My family's biggest worry is not knowing where to buy banana seeds. If we can find a source of seeds, we can only plant again after Tet," Ms. Lap said.

Also in Thanh Ha, many grapefruit gardens in Lap Le village, Thanh Hong commune, save fruit to sell for Tet, but after the storm, more than 200 hectares of Thanh Hong peach grapefruit have lost almost all of their fruit. The remaining fruits are damaged, with bruised skins that are not attractive. Mr. Le Quy Su, Chairman of Thanh Hong Commune People's Committee, said that this year, grapefruit and banana crops have failed, so Tet agricultural products are very rare, and people may have to buy them elsewhere at high prices.

According to statistics, Thanh Ha district has about 70% of grapefruit, banana, guava area, about 50% of lychee area, about 50% of other crops that cannot recover. Particularly lemon, kumquat and Tet banana growing areas in Thanh Khe, An Phuong, Vinh Lap communes, Tet kumquat growing areas in An Phuong, Thanh Son, Thanh Thuy communes... also cannot be harvested.

Not only in Thanh Ha, other banana and grapefruit growing areas in the province such as Tu Ky, Kinh Mon... are also in a similar situation. After the storm, it will take a few more years for farmers' grapefruit and kumquat areas to recover as before. Even bananas for Tet will take a whole year.

Agricultural products are essential goods, so demand will increase at the end of the year. This is also an important crop that generates the main income for many farmers, especially as a source of income to compensate for the damage caused by storm No. 3. There are still nearly 4 months left until Tet. This is the golden time for farmers to restock, quickly restore and stabilize production to serve the year-end market. Therefore, farmers need to proactively prepare a source of goods to ensure quality to meet market demand.

According to the forecast of essential goods consumed in 1 month of Tet by the Department of Industry and Trade in previous years, from December 15 to January 15, the purchasing power of agricultural products in Hai Duong market includes: 5,000-6,000 tons of rice, 3,000-4,000 tons of livestock meat, 1.2-1.3 million poultry eggs, 500-550 tons of chicken meat, 900-1,000 tons of aquatic products, seafood, 10,000-12,000 tons of vegetables, tubers, fruits...

In addition to meeting the needs of the province, many products can also be supplied to neighboring localities. In one month, Hai Duong can supply to the market outside the province 10,000 tons of rice, 3,000 tons of pork, 2,600 tons of poultry, 6 million eggs, 3,000 tons of freshwater fish, 20,000-40,000 tons of vegetables, tubers, fruits...
