Officers and soldiers of Tam Quang Border Guard Station participate in building shelters for poor households in the area.

Mr. Xong Ga Po, nearly 70 years old, lives alone in a temporary house in Huoi Son village (Tam Hop commune, Tuong Duong district, Nghe An province). Understanding his situation, Tam Hop Border Guard Station (Nghe An Provincial Border Guard) coordinated with units and benefactors to support his family with 50 million VND, and mobilized officers, soldiers and youth volunteers to contribute working days to build a new, spacious house for him.

On the day he moved into his new home, Mr. Xong Ga Po emotionally shared: “My family’s circumstances are very difficult. Thanks to the care of the Party, the State, the border guards, and the help of benefactors, I have a new house. I am very grateful.”

Similar to Mr. Po's situation, Mrs. Va Chong Lau (60 years old), in Nhon Mai village, Nhon Mai commune, Tuong Duong district, is old and weak, her economy depends on farming, and has just received support from Nhon Mai Border Guard Station in coordination with local authorities to build a new house.

Ms. Va Y May, Mrs. Lau's daughter, shared: "My mother's previous house was in disrepair. On rainy days, she had to stay at other houses in the village. Now that we have a new, solid house, the family feels very secure."

Nhon Mai Border Guard Station coordinated with local authorities to hand over the house to Ms. Va Chong Lau's family.

Talking to us, Lieutenant Colonel Phan Thanh Hong, Chief of Nhon Mai Border Guard Station said: “There are still many poor households in the area facing difficulties in housing. With the support and companionship of all levels and sectors in funding the construction of new houses, it has helped poor households realize their dream of having a stable home so they can work with peace of mind.”

Recently, Tam Quang Border Guard Station coordinated with Tam Quang commune authorities and benefactors to start building a house for Mr. Vi Cong Oanh (born 1956), a particularly poor household in Tan Huong village, Tam Quang commune.

Mr. Oanh and his wife are old and weak, often sick, and have to live in a level 4 house that has been degraded for many years. To help the family rebuild the temporary house, Tam Quang Border Guard Station has connected with benefactors to support 145 million VND, and the unit has supported labor days to help Mr. Oanh's family build a new house, expected to be completed and put into use in May 2025.

Tam Quang Border Guard Station coordinated with local forces to build a house to help Mr. Vi Cong Oanh's family.

Nghe An has 27 border communes, where people's lives are still difficult, many households have to live in temporary houses.

Determined to support the elimination of temporary and dilapidated houses, Nghe An Provincial Border Guard has closely coordinated with local Party committees and authorities, mobilizing organizations, individuals, and philanthropists to support funding, while officers and soldiers support working days to build houses for poor households.

Comrade Vi Thi Huong, Chairwoman of the People's Committee of Mai Son Commune, Tuong Duong District, highly appreciated the practical support of the Border Guard in the past time, especially in the movement to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses. "In 2024 alone, Nhon Mai Border Guard Station built 6 houses for poor households in Mai Son Commune. Having new houses helps people feel secure in developing the economy and building a new life," said Comrade Vi Thi Huong.

In order for the movement to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses to be highly effective, the Border Guard Command of Nghe An province has directed units to continue to propagate, mobilize, and coordinate with local authorities, organizations, and individuals to mobilize resources to support money, materials, and working days, and quickly help poor households build new houses.

Colonel Tran Dang Khoa, Deputy Commissar of the Nghe An Provincial Border Guard, said: “Supporting housing construction not only helps improve people's lives, but also demonstrates the responsibility and affection of the Border Guard to people in border areas. In 2024 alone, the Nghe An Provincial Border Guard coordinated to build 349 new houses and repair 374 houses. In addition, officers and soldiers also contributed more than 2,000 working days to repair and lay foundations for 901 houses in 6 border districts.”

With the cooperation of local authorities, Border Guards and the hearts of philanthropists, the shelters at the border have contributed to adding strength and confidence, helping people build an increasingly stable life.
