Công tác chỉ đạo tuần tra, kiểm tra bảo vệ rừng và động vật hoang dã, phòng cháy chữa cháy luôn được lãnh đạo VQG Cát Tiên quan tâm và đặt lên hàng đầu,
The work of directing patrols, inspecting forest and wildlife protection, and fire prevention and fighting is always of interest to and placed at the top of the list by the leaders of Cat Tien National Park.

Watching wild animals at night

On the days leading up to the Lunar New Year of At Ty 2025, we had the opportunity to visit Cat Tien National Park, located in Nam Cat Tien Commune, Tan Phu District (Dong Nai). The park was established in 1978, with a total area of 71,187.9 hectares, located in the three provinces of Dong Nai, Lam Dong and Binh Phuoc. This place is recognized as a World Biosphere Reserve, an International Ramsar Site and a Special National Monument...

Coming to Cat Tien National Park, we were delighted to experience the actual trip through the forest at night to see wild animals with our own eyes. Every day, there are dozens of buses carrying domestic and foreign tourists to visit, traveling on a nearly 6km road to see nocturnal wild animals.

With a diversity of animal species such as: 40 species listed in the world red book including Asian elephants, gaurs, sun bears, black bears, wild buffalo, deer and hundreds of rare species of wood and wild orchids. Cat Tien National Park has long been famous as a place with fresh climate, beautiful landscape, a favorite destination for many people, especially young people and foreign tourists.

During the trip, we were lucky to directly observe many nocturnal wild animals along both sides of the road such as deer, wild muntjac, roe deer, wild boar...

Witnessing the above scene, Mr. Minh Anh (residing in Dinh Quan, Dong Nai, a tourist visiting Cat Tien National Park) happily said: “I am very happy to have a picnic like this at the end of the year. The weather is very cool, I get to see deer, sheep, wild boars… very cute. I hope that the park leaders pay great attention and have a high sense of responsibility in conservation work for sustainable development.”

According to the leader of Cat Tien National Park, the park currently has 1,729 animal species, including some rare and globally threatened species such as Asian elephants, hairy cows, freshwater crocodiles, sun bears, black-shanked doucs, pythons, reticulated pythons, etc. Regarding plants: Cat Tien National Park has a total of 1,655 species belonging to 168 families and 57 different orders, accounting for 62% of the total orders and nearly 55% of the total families of plants in Vietnam.

Cat Tien National Park has a large forest area and rich resources, is home to many wild animals, so it is an easy target for illegal logging and hunting. On the other hand, criminals are currently targeting the poor and people with low education in border areas to lure them into forest destruction, hunting wildlife and bringing them into the country for consumption by sophisticated means of transportation. Therefore, the issue of forest and wildlife protection in the park is always focused on and put at the top.

Ông Nguyễn Thanh Long, Phó Hạt trưởng Hạt kiểm lâm VQG Cát Tiên
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Long, Deputy Head of Cat Tien National Park Forest Protection Department

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Long, Deputy Head of Cat Tien National Park Forest Protection Department said: “Cat Tien National Park plays a particularly important role, so protecting and preserving the values of the ecosystem and biodiversity is very urgent now and in the future. Cat Tien National Park Management Board has organized and implemented many important plans; proactively developed plans, managed and protected Cat Tien National Park, focusing on both peak seasons, dry seasons from January to June, bamboo shoot season, especially before, during and after Tet...”.

Defying danger… bringing peace to the forest

Following the cadres who are tasked with protecting Cat Tien National Park, we have noted that the population density around the park is still quite high with more than 20,000,000 people living adjacent to it. The lives of people in the core and buffer zones of the park still face many difficulties. Agricultural production is the main activity, a part of the population depends on forest resources for survival, which also puts great pressure on forest management and protection. Therefore, from the beginning of the year, Cat Tien National Park Forest Protection Department has proactively developed many plans, including the 2024 Forest Protection Contracting Plan for approval by the Park Director.

Every step of patrolling and checking to protect the forest and wildlife at the "forest gate" always has hidden dangers...

“The purpose of the plan is to gradually socialize the forestry profession, mobilize the maximum number of people to participate in protecting the forest at the root, create more legitimate and sustainable income for the buffer zone community; and improve the effectiveness of forest protection,” said Nguyen Thanh Long, Deputy Head of Cat Tien National Park Forest Protection Department.

Accordingly, the total area providing forest environmental services is 78,561 ha/82,597 ha of natural area, the forest protection contract organization has an area of 31,690 ha/47 communities/1,230 households and 2 collective units, with a total cost of more than 10.5 billion VND. The entire forest protection contract area is well protected. Thanks to that, people's awareness in forest protection is increasingly enhanced.

For patrolling and inspecting the protection of forests and wildlife, only by “witnessing” can one see the silent sacrifices of those on duty here. They have to go through many difficulties and dangers to bring peace to the “forest gate”…

According to Mr. Pham Ngoc Tuan, Deputy Head of the Mobile Forest Ranger Station (under the Cat Tien National Park Forest Ranger Department), usually at Cat Tien National Park, any time is a key time. However, the peak time is near Tet, during Tet and after Tet. Due to the high demand for forest products. This is also the time when some people without stable jobs engage in hunting activities... Therefore, the brothers have built a plan very early and come up with solutions to protect forests and wildlife with the best results.

Similarly, Mr. Tran Dinh Hung, a ranger at the Mobile Forest Ranger Station (under the Cat Tien National Park Forest Ranger Department) also shared that the process of patrolling the forest encountered many difficulties, especially during storms and rains, always having to be secretive to avoid being discovered in order to ambush and capture illegal wildlife hunters and loggers. Violators used guns very aggressively, even ready to fight back against the authorities when surrounded and captured...

Typically, nearly 2 years ago, the incident in which 3 rangers of Cat Tien National Park were slashed and injured while patrolling, discovering and capturing many illegal hunters of wild animals attracted public attention. The incident left 3 rangers injured and had to be taken to the hospital for emergency treatment. The police expanded the investigation and arrested 6 related subjects.

On the other hand, the latest report of Cat Tien National Park Forest Protection Department also shows that in 2024, the forest rangers actively and proactively patrolled to protect the forest, promptly detected, prevented, and processed 52 cases, and handled 73 violators. In particular, the authorities prosecuted 2 cases with 4 subjects. Of which, 1 subject was prosecuted in the case of illegal transportation of forest products; 1 case of illegal possession of military weapons was handled with 3 related subjects....

From the remaining violations, we can see that the patrolling, checking and protecting forests and wildlife of Cat Tien National Park officers is not simple. It can be said that around them, every step at the "forest gate" is always lurking danger. Understanding that, the officers here often encourage each other to try their best to complete the task...

Leaving Cat Tien National Park, heading towards Ho Chi Minh City, throughout the journey, we silently thanked the people here! They did not mind the difficulties and hardships, and were willing to sacrifice with the desire to bring peace to the forest.
