Things to keep in mind when using public Wi-Fi

Despite its many benefits, public Wi-Fi still has potential risks. According to Zdnet , the cause could be an insecure Wi-Fi network or a hacker setting up a fake access point to fool users.

People often choose public Wi-Fi because of its convenience.

Verify network origin

When going to public places, people often want to connect to free Wi-Fi instead of having to register for a 3G/4G package, but free Wi-Fi can sometimes be a trap created by hackers. When connecting, bad guys can capture all the data you send. When you see many Wi-Fi at a restaurant or airport, you should only log in to the Wi-Fi printed on the sign. If there are many Wi-Fi with the same name but you cannot determine which is real, you should not connect to them.

Be careful when entering data

Many public Wi-Fi networks require users to provide information to register, such as an email address or phone number. If you're concerned about the Wi-Fi company storing or using that data for marketing purposes, consider using a secondary email address.

If a public Wi-Fi requires you to set a password to access it, do not use the same password as your personal account. This way, if your Wi-Fi password is accidentally leaked, hackers will not be able to use it to take over your account. Users should also avoid making banking transactions while using free Wi-Fi to avoid the risk of revealing their login name and password.

Forget network when not in use

If you’re a frequent traveler who frequently accesses different networks, your device may remember the Wi-Fi you’ve used and automatically reconnect to it when you return. While it’s common to assume that public Wi-Fi is always reliable, it’s possible that things have changed between visits. To be safe, set your device to forget the network or tell it not to automatically reconnect to Wi-Fi you’ve used before.

Use VPN

Users can use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) as an additional step to protect their identity. VPNs can encrypt user data, allowing users to remain anonymous and conceal their IP address, which is an important feature for those who need online privacy.

While there are many free VPN services on the market, they may ask users for unnecessary permissions or fail to fully anonymize their data. Experts recommend that users choose reputable VPN brands, as they often offer both paid and premium versions.

Using mobile data on smartphones

Instead of connecting to public Wi-Fi, users can choose to register for a 3G/4G package. If you want your laptop to connect to the internet, you can use your smartphone to broadcast Wi-Fi for other devices to access. Users should also set a complex password to make sure no one else can connect.
