In the past two years, although I have traveled to many places and experienced many destinations, Rome still leaves me with a deep impression of a charming city.
The famous Roman Colosseum in Rome, Italy. |
Rome - the capital of Italy, a country located in the south of France with a beautiful boot shape. The city has a history dating back to 753 BC and is the starting point of the ancient Roman Empire. The reason I chose Rome as my destination, perhaps because… it was just Rome, because Rome had been heard many times in many stories. And because of the saying: all roads lead to Rome…
Warm and romantic
If in Paris, Prague or Vienna everything has the appearance of ancient architecture that is somewhat gloomy, Rome tells me a different story.
The first day I arrived in Rome, I was impressed by the huge buildings in bright orange or yellow tones. Along the way, when I saw the flames burning in the middle of the large square, I felt like I was entering another world – a world of thousands of years of history and culture.
Rome’s winter sky is blue, the air is cold but cloudless. Along the streets, the leaves turn a bright, romantic yellow. The city gives me an indescribable feeling of warmth and comfort.
Trevi Fountain
The Trevi Fountain (Fontana di Trevi) – one of the symbols of Rome, is the largest fountain in the city and also one of the most famous fountains in the world. The fountain was completed in 1762, with the centerpiece being the sculpture of the water god Oceanus.
It is believed that if you throw a coin into this place, you will return to Rome and your wish will come true. It is estimated that the Rome government collects about 4,000 USD per day from the number of coins tourists throw into the bottom of the lake.
Through the media and the setting of movies featuring the Trevi Fountain, such as “La dolce vita”, this place has become extremely popular with tourists.
I arrived at Trevi around 6pm and it was still packed with people, everyone wanting a seat by the fountain to enjoy a cup of Gelato and toss a coin with a wish for a return to this beautiful city in the future.
Opposite the Fountain is a very beautiful and special church, called the Church of Saint Vincent and Saint Anastasius in Trevi (Santi Vincenzo e Anastasio a Trevi) which dates back to the 10th century.
The church was restored between 1646 and 1650. It is said that this is where 22 Popes' hearts were kept, before this tradition was abolished in 1903.
Colosseum and Arc de Triomphe
I spent almost an entire morning visiting the Palatine Hill area, home to the ruins of the Colosseum, the Arch of Rome and the ruins on the Palatine Hill.
Palatine is one of the seven Roman hills (Aventine, Caelius, Capitoline, Esquiline, Palatine, Quirinal and Viminal). According to legend, on this hill, Romulus - the first king of the Roman Kingdom - founded Rome and was the place where the ancient elite lived. The ruins of ancient palaces and gardens still remain here.
The Colosseum is a structure that is considered a historical witness of the city of Rome. The arena was built around 70 AD. This is where gladiator fights were held. It is estimated that more than 500,000 people and 1,000,000 animals died due to the matches held in this bloody arena.
As soon as I stepped out of the Metro station and approached this massive monument, I felt a moment of pause, thinking that the place I was standing on had witnessed the ups and downs of Rome for nearly 2,000 years. To this day, although the monument is only 1/3 of its original design due to the devastation of past events, the Colosseum is still considered one of the most beautiful Roman architectures that still exists today.
Right next to it is the Arch of Constantine. The structure is a triumphal arch in Rome, completed in 315 AD and is currently the largest triumphal arch in Rome.
The experience of eating ice cream at the Trevi Fountain is unforgettable. |
Gelato and Quiet Nights
Ice cream is a powerful gift that can make any child’s eyes sparkle. For adults, ice cream is a spiritual therapy that helps recall innocent memories of a carefree time. Coming to Italy, the Gelato ice cream here reminds me of how far I have traveled to be able to eat this happy snack.
In Rome, gelato is everywhere. It can be in carts or in shops where you and I can search and mix our favorite flavors from dozens of scents that are both refreshing and sweet.
I also cannot forget the evenings walking along the small streets, winding around the city. More than half of the wanderings occurred when I got lost. But thanks to those incidents, I had the opportunity to feel a quiet Rome at night. Away from the crowded tourist places, you will come to the small, peaceful cobblestone streets. The yellow lights shining on the street further thicken the peaceful but extremely romantic atmosphere of the city at night.
Rome in particular and Italy in general have gone through extremely difficult days fighting the Covid-19 pandemic. However, with the efforts of the government and the solidarity of the people, peace has now returned to this city. Tourists like me will forever remember the blue sky and the special feeling in Rome, longing to return one day.
The capital Rome is located in the west of the Italian peninsula, on the Mediterranean peninsula. Rome is a city with a history of more than 2,800 years, with a distinct beauty, both ancient and sweetly modern, symbolizing the Italian lifestyle, slow but very romantic. Rome is a city rich in tradition, mythology, customs and folklore throughout the Middle Ages. Rome is also known as the land that preserves many great architectural heritages from ancient times to the Middle Ages. The whole city is like a giant museum with many arenas, palaces, monasteries, squares, ancient fortresses... in which many squares still retain their original shape from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. The city is also one of Europe's largest green spaces, with a vast network of parks and nature reserves. Rome is Europe's top tourist destination and is among the world's 11 most visited cities... |
