Having just graduated from college with a major in Applied Software Programming, International Information Technology Training System - Bachkhoa Aptech, Vu Duc Hoang (22 years old from Phu Tho) was disillusioned with his previous expectations.

High salary dream broken

Since high school, Duc Hoang has been passionate about, learned about and learned that Programming and Information Technology are hot majors with high salaries after graduation. He decided to enroll with the dream of a salary of 30 - 50 million VND/month.

During his studies, Duc Hoang did not achieve many outstanding achievements but always did well in both theory and practice exams. Graduating in August 2022, he held his degree in hand with the hope of finding a satisfactory job and a high salary that he had long dreamed of.

Things were not as he thought. When he applied at the programming company, the salary Hoang was offered was only 3 - 5 million VND/month.

"After receiving the explanation from the employer, I was disillusioned. A salary of 10-30-50 million VND/month is only for experienced people or excellent university graduates with outstanding research," Duc Hoang said. As for students with average academic performance, graduating from non-famous schools, they are lucky to find a job.

He reluctantly accepted this job with the requirement to write code for the web (written in web programming languages to create a complete website).

After 3 months, Hoang began to feel discouraged and found it difficult to keep up with the knowledge and requirements of the company. On top of that, the income was too low for him to sustain his life in Hanoi. Finally, the young man decided to quit his job to find a new environment.

He currently works in image analysis (analyzing objects in an image including cars and people so that the AI of self-driving cars can recognize them). Hoang's salary is a bit higher than his old company, about 7 million VND/month, depending on work performance.

In the same situation as Hoang, Nguyen Hoai Nam (22 years old, from Yen Bai) graduated from FPT Polytechnic College and admitted to regretting choosing Web Programming.

In 2020, standing at the threshold of university, Nam refused to enroll in the University of Internal Affairs to enroll in FPT Polytechnic College. He gave his family the reason to convince them that web programming is easy to get a job, the salary is high, most job forums share about this.

Coming from a D block student background, Nam was overwhelmed by the knowledge of this major when he entered school, "more accurately, it was extremely difficult". He had to struggle to catch up and pass the subject.

After much effort, in May 2023, the male student graduated from school with the dream of a high salary as rumored, enough money to live and send back to his parents in the countryside.

Nam was lucky to be recruited into a web programming company in Cau Giay area, Hanoi, but in his first month's salary, all his hopes and dreams collapsed when his bank account showed an additional 4,755,000 VND.

He consoled himself that this was just a probationary salary, "it would gradually increase". He worked hard, working overtime, day and night, taking advantage of his breaks to gain more experience and learn from his senior colleagues. It was now the 5th month since he joined the company, and his salary was no more than 6 million VND.

This salary is only enough to pay for rent and daily expenses, "every month I have to borrow a few hundred from friends to maintain".

The young man admitted that he was not strong in computers and had little knowledge or practical experience, making him increasingly tired and skeptical about this choice.

Disillusioned with high salaries, Hoai Nam realized that: "Before wanting to study this profession, students should consider carefully, determine whether they are capable of studying and doing it, then make a decision. You should not follow the advertisements and 'enrollment traps' of hot majors."

IT students, first of all, need to start from passion.

Mr. Nguyen Anh Dung, head of the Software Application Department, FPT Polytechnic College Hanoi, said that to have a high salary in the IT industry depends a lot on the ability, working attitude and skills of the students.

"It's not true that if you study IT well, you will have a high salary after graduation, but it requires many factors," Mr. Dung affirmed and worried that many students rush to study IT, considering it the easiest path to success. Before studying, students need to clearly determine whether they like and love this profession or not before making a choice.

He also warned that some IT students are setting too high expectations for their graduation salary, and then after graduation, they are disappointed, become bored, and give up the profession.

According to Mr. Dung, the IT industry requires high problem-solving ability and logical thinking. Many students, regardless of their natural talent and lack of natural science thinking, will be confused when entering the major, revealing their weak thinking. That is also the reason why many students drop out of school or feel helpless when working in a professional environment.

Giving advice to students who are preparing to study IT, Mr. Dung said that before studying or doing anything, you must like it or have a real passion for it. Clearly define what you want to achieve in the IT industry, a specific goal will help you focus on learning the necessary skills.

Students should have a good understanding of the fundamentals of the industry, building a strong foundation for future development. More practice will help you learn quickly and accumulate practical experience. In addition, try to improve your English skills, always update your knowledge and keep up with new trends so as not to be left behind.
