Many businesses say they only need to recruit students who are good at foreign languages, they don't need experience or major because they can train them.

The job fair held at Hanoi National University (HANU) on December 15 had more than 30 businesses participating. The campus was bustling with 3,000 students coming to find information, have direct interviews, and seek advice on CV editing and career...

Intending to recruit 15-20 tour sales, communications, and tour guides, Ms. Tran Thi Trinh, of the Asia East Joint Stock Company, said the main requirement for students is to have good foreign language skills. Her company recruits people who know English, German, French, Spanish, and Italian with a salary of 10-13 million VND per month, not including some other benefits.

T-Frame, a company specializing in steel drawings for construction projects in Japan, said that the only requirement for finding design staff is knowing Japanese.

"You only need the language, and the design major will be trained," said Mr. Wakayama Masashi, General Director of the company.

Similarly, China's Longi Vina Solar, a solar energy specialist, and Singapore's SAB Industrial Co., Ltd., which manufactures zippers and metal buttons for the garment industry, are recruiting dozens of office workers, the only requirement being proficiency in Chinese.

Businesses all say that the number one criterion is the candidate's foreign language ability, and expertise will be trained later.

Explaining, employers say that businesses, even though they are specialized, still need office, administrative, and marketing positions. Because it is a company with foreign investment or doing business with foreign countries, employees in these positions must of course know foreign languages.

At Longi Vina Solar, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Hang, in charge of recruitment, said that the office block has to do jobs such as translation, logistics, customs, import-export, purchasing or assistant work with the Chinese side.

SAB Company said that although it will start operating in January 2024, it has not yet recruited enough 30 office staff who are proficient in all four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing Chinese.

"Therefore, businesses target new graduates who have no experience but have foreign languages," said Ms. Huong Giang, a company representative.

Meanwhile, foreign language students are assessed to have good thinking because they study many languages in parallel and have access to a lot of cultural and social knowledge. Ms. Trinh commented that foreign language students are confident, individualistic and can take on many jobs. Although they do not study a specific major in depth, when they encounter a real environment, they learn very quickly.

"After a 2-3 month probationary period, you will be able to integrate into the job," said Ms. Trinh, adding that 50-60% of the company's current employees graduated with foreign language majors.

However, employers believe that if students have more communication skills and office computer skills, their job opportunities will certainly be better. Ms. Hang and Ms. Huong said that they have met many foreign language students who graduated but did not know how to present, draw charts or write reports, so they had to be trained from the beginning.

In response to the opinion that with the development of technology and AI (artificial intelligence), job opportunities for foreign language students will be narrowed, recruitment experts say there is no need to be too concerned.

Ms. Trinh gives an example of AI not being able to show the style of the business when introducing products or quoting tour prices to customers. Because a Vietnamese word can have many different meanings and nuances, depending on the context of use. Students who are good at foreign languages and understand the context of use will be able to communicate more accurately.

Ms. Hang agreed, saying that job opportunities for foreign language students will not be reduced, but will even be expanded because foreign language training schools are now also guiding students to study additional subjects in tourism, communications, pedagogy, etc.

Dang Mai, a third-year student majoring in Japanese Language, came to the Job Fair to learn about recruitment needs and requirements for graduating students. Mai wants to become a teacher so she visited booths of more than ten organizations and foreign language centers.

"They don't require experience, just B1 level," Mai said. After asking around, the female student realized she needed to improve her computer skills and how to expand her relationships.

The Job Fair is an annual activity of Hanoi University, aiming to provide students with information about industries and careers; opportunities to meet businesses to prepare for the application process.
