Recently, many major universities in Australia have announced plans to increase tuition fees for international students starting from 2025.

An article in the Australian newspaper quoted sources saying that some schools such as the University of Melbourne, the University of New South Wales and the University of Western Sydney are expected to increase tuition fees by 7%, while the Australian National University and the University of Sydney will increase their fees by 5.8% and 3-4% respectively.
For example, the University of Melbourne is expected to increase tuition fees to AUD 56,480 per year for engineering courses and AUD 54,048 for commerce courses.
A representative of the University of Melbourne said that operating costs and pressure to improve the quality of education are a major challenge for universities in Australia. Especially in the post-COVID-19 pandemic period, revenue sources have been severely affected.
"The tuition fee increase is a necessary step so that we can continue to provide our facilities, advanced research equipment, as well as our experienced teaching staff," a University of Melbourne spokesperson stressed.
At the University of New South Wales, tuition fees will increase to AUD 58,560 per year for most courses.
The school said the fluctuating Australian dollar (AUD) and increasing living costs have had a major impact on the school budget.
"Increasing tuition fees helps us balance our revenue to invest in research, improve facilities and maintain the quality of education that students expect," said a school representative.
The University of Sydney said the expected tuition fee increase of about 3-4% was carefully calculated before making the decision, to ensure that international students can still access the quality educational services the school provides.
A representative of the school said: "We understand that any increase will affect students and their families, especially those from low- and middle-income countries. However, with current inflation rates and the cost of providing facilities that meet international standards, we have little choice."
Many international students have expressed concern in response to the announcement. Aliya, a student from India studying at the University of Sydney, said the current tuition fees were already a huge burden for her family. The increase could force many students like her to reconsider their decision to study in Australia or work more to cover the costs.
Aliya also shared that many international students do not often receive scholarships like domestic students, so the increased tuition fees will be a challenge.
Australian Education Minister Jason Clare stressed that tuition fee increases were a decision for individual Australian universities. "It is a matter for individual universities to decide how much tuition they charge for international students," he said.
However, many experts believe that the Australian Government's recent decision to "cap" the number of international students coming to Australia in 2025 at 270,000, while assigning "quotas" to each university, also has some influence on the decision to increase tuition fees.

Studying in Australia is getting more expensive?
The increase in Australian university tuition fees is considered to create an additional "burden" for international students wishing to study in Australia. Earlier this year, the international student visa fee to Australia also doubled from 710 AUD to 1,600 AUD.
Despite this significant increase and concerns from stakeholders about the impact on Australia's attractiveness as a study destination, some current international student groups say they will not be affected by the new visa fees, according to The PIE News .
