Ho Chi Minh City has just completed the repair and renovation of a series of traffic infrastructure projects, including large underpasses and bridges, with a total cost of nearly 5 billion VND. The locations repaired include Bui Huu Nghia Bridge, Dien Bien Phu underpass on Truong Sa Street, Van Thanh underpass, Thu Thiem Bridge, underpasses under Binh Trieu Bridge, Cong Ly Bridge, Dien Bien Phu underpass on Hoang Sa Street, Calmette Bridge, Ong Lanh Bridge, Nguyen Tri Phuong Bridge and many other locations.
Over the years, bridges, roads and tunnels in the city have been frequently stained with graffiti, despite being repainted many times by authorities.
Recently, the Nguyen Huu Canh underpass (Binh Thanh District) has been renovated and repainted. This is the first underpass in Ho Chi Minh City, on the main route from the city center to Saigon Bridge. The inside of the underpass is 26m wide and 430m long, modern and spacious, but after many years of use, it has been painted dirty and offensive.
Before being repainted, Nguyen Huu Canh underpass was completely covered with graffiti sprayed with colored paint, leaving no white space on the walls.
Many sections of the wall inside the tunnel that were once defaced, stretching dozens of meters, have been repainted with non-stick paint that can be easily erased when graffiti is written on.
According to the representative of the Road Traffic Infrastructure Management Center, after completing the white paint, the walls will be covered with an additional layer of non-stick coating on the surface. If the constructions are dirty or have graffiti, it will be easily fixed by using a water sprayer or an eraser.
Nguyen Huu Canh underpass "wears a new coat" after being repainted. The clean image of the underpass contributes to making the scenery of Nguyen Huu Canh street more modern.
Located next to Nguyen Huu Canh underpass, Thu Thiem bridge was once covered with graffiti, but has now been gradually removed, making the underpass cleaner and more beautiful.
Khanh Hoi Bridge underpass (District 1 side) from Vo Van Kiet Street to Bach Dang Wharf was also repaired and painted.
However, the problem of graffiti and urban defacement still exists in many other projects in Ho Chi Minh City.
The pedestrian bridge across the Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal, which was put into operation 2 months ago, also suffered the same fate of being painted with graffiti, similar to many other projects in Ho Chi Minh City.
Mong Bridge (District 1) is one of the structures most heavily affected by graffiti. The bridge’s railings, railings, and walkways, which are over 130 years old, are covered in graffiti.
Recently, the authorities in Ho Chi Minh City have made efforts to prevent graffiti. In addition to giving rewards to people who discover graffiti, the units are looking for solutions to coordinate with units, districts and towns in the city to increase patrols and handle graffiti by fining and requiring remedial measures. However, it seems that the situation of spraying paint and graffiti has not decreased.
