Many hospitals in Quang Nam face difficulties due to lack of medicine and medical supplies.

Severely deficient

Mr. Doan Van Sen, Director of the Thang Binh District Medical Center (Quang Nam), said that the shortage of medicine and medical supplies at the unit has been happening since the beginning of the year.

The reason is that the bidding documents for 2023 until June 2024 still do not have bidding documents. To temporarily solve this problem, the health center temporarily purchases emergency drugs to serve patients. If the illness is serious, the center will transfer to a higher level.

Many medical facilities in Quang Nam province are facing difficulties due to lack of medicine.

Doctor Nguyen Tai, Director of Quang Nam Regional General Hospital, said that the hospital is also facing a serious shortage of medicine and medical supplies.

"The shortage of medicine and medical supplies has been going on since the beginning of the year. The hospital is borrowing and buying medicine from other hospitals in the whole system. Currently, all types of medicine in the hospital are in short supply. In about 2 months, if there are no medicines, the hospital will face many difficulties," said Dr. Tai.

Doctor Tai said that according to regulations, a tender lasts for 18 months, and when the tender expires, a new tender will be created to replace it so that the hospital has enough medicine and medical supplies. But up to now, the hospital has not had any tender packages.

The Quang Nam Provincial Department of Health assigned the Quang Nam Regional General Hospital to bid for the package of traditional medicine, but currently there are many problems. It is worth mentioning that on April 27, there was a circular changing the group of drugs, so the hospital had to change the time to re-check the bid. Previously, there were only 3 groups, now there are 4 groups. If the groups are changed, the prices of the drugs will also change, leading to a prolonged bidding process.

"In case of a serious patient, the hospital will transfer the patient to a higher level. If the remaining equivalent drugs are available, the patient will be supported," Dr. Tai informed.

Buy free medicine for people

Doctor Tran Do Nhan, Director of Duy Xuyen District Medical Center (Quang Nam), said that the shortage of medicine and medical supplies occurs in many places, and Duy Xuyen District Medical Center also has a shortage but it is not significant.

Medical examination and treatment are difficult due to lack of medicine and medical supplies.

"For essential medicines that are within the scope of the health center's capacity, we will spend money to buy them and distribute them to people for free," Dr. Nhan shared.

Mr. Mai Van Muoi, Director of the Department of Health of Quang Nam province, said that the shortage of medicine and medical supplies is not only in Quang Nam province but also occurs in many areas across the country.

According to Mr. Muoi, the reason for this situation is due to the delay in bidding packages and the old bidding plan, the medicine reserves of hospitals and health centers are not yet ready... leading to the drugs running out before the deadline. Along with that, the inspection of the bidding package is in the middle, but on April 27, there is a new guiding circular, leading to a loss of time to do it again from the beginning.

"Currently, hospitals are checking the bidding process. It is expected that in about a month, the bidding will be opened to help medical units in the whole province have medicine and medical supplies to serve medical examination and treatment," said Mr. Muoi.
