The above Official Security Assistance Agreement (OSA) was signed by the two countries' foreign ministers in Tokyo, on the sidelines of the special ASEAN-Japan summit to mark 50 years of relations between Japan and ASEAN, according to Reuters.
Japan will also provide equipment such as rescue boats and supplies to Malaysia, according to the OSA. The Japanese Foreign Ministry added that Tokyo will also provide surveillance drones to Kuala Lumpur.

Also according to the Japanese Foreign Ministry, Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio welcomed the upgrading of the Japan-Malaysia relationship to a "comprehensive strategic partnership".
At a meeting with his Malaysian counterpart Anwar Ibrahim in Tokyo the same day, Prime Minister Kishida expressed hope that bilateral cooperation could be enhanced "to maintain a free and open international order based on the rule of law," according to Kyodo News.
For his part, Prime Minister Anwar said Japan's role in ensuring stability in Asia is "important" and "strategic" for Malaysia.
Tokyo launched the security assistance program in April and designated four countries, Malaysia, Fiji, the Philippines and Bangladesh, as recipients.
Also on December 16 in Tokyo, Prime Minister Kishida agreed with Indonesian President Joko Widodo that Japan will provide a large patrol ship to the Indonesian coast guard and support the development of the Southeast Asian country's new capital Nusantara, according to Kyodo News.
