DNVN - Retailers are under pressure from omnichannel selling, especially in managing online returns and reducing losses due to theft, fraud and other factors.

According to the 16th Annual Global Procurement Study just released by Zebra Technologies Corporation, globally, 8 out of 10 retailers agree that reducing fraud/loss is a significant challenge (82%) and their business is in dire need of demand forecasting capabilities (86%).

In the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, the above opinions are at 74% and 89%, respectively. According to the US National Retail Federation (NRF), in 2022, retailers lost $112 billion due to shrinkage, up from nearly $94 billion in 2021. Zebra research shows that 36% of global retailers (40% in APAC) believe that more accurate shrinkage analysis could increase profits.

More retailers are expected to deploy loss prevention analytics (49% globally, 55% in CA-PTB) and demand planning and forecasting (54% globally, 61% in CA-PTB) by 2026.

While omnichannel shopping poses challenges for retailers, most shoppers want more choice when shopping. Nearly 9 in 10 global and Asia Pacific shoppers favor a mix of online and in-store shopping, while 75% of global shoppers and 72% of Asia Pacific shoppers prefer to shop online with online retailers that have offline stores.

More than half of retailers plan to deploy handheld inventory machines, barcode scanners...

As omnichannel shopping continues to grow, so do returns. About 7 in 10 global and Asia-Pacific retailers say they are under increasing pressure to improve the efficiency and cost of managing online orders, returns, and fulfillment. Six in 10 retailers say they will upgrade their returns management technology by 2026. In Asia-Pacific, 74% of retailers are in the process of upgrading, 12 percentage points higher than the global survey respondents.

The returns issue also affects related industries, especially warehousing. Retailers are tapping into the power of technology to help manage returns, with 62% of them globally (68% in CA-Pacific) saying they plan to deploy reverse logistics technology by 2026 to better manage order fulfillment. Nearly three in ten retailers (31% globally, 32% in CA-Pacific) say charging a fee on online orders from customers who frequently return items could improve overall online store profitability.

Advances in retail services are raising consumer expectations of technology. In fact, 8 in 10 consumers surveyed (80% globally, 81% in CA-PTD) expect retailers to adopt the latest technology; 7 in 10 (74% globally, 77% in CA-PTD) say technology improves their shopping experience.

In response to this trend, more than half of retailers plan to deploy handheld inventory computers (56% globally, 64% in CA-TBD), barcode scanners (54% globally, 61% in CA-TBD), RFID (61% globally, 69% in CA-TBD), as well as task management software (54% globally, 62% in CA-TBD) and human resource management (56% globally, 62% in CA-TBD) by 2026.

The study also found that 84% of employees globally and in the Asia-Pacific region feel more valued and rate their employers more positively (81% globally, 79% in Asia-Pacific) when equipped with technology to help them do their jobs.

“Today in Vietnam, to successfully operate a modern store, retailers need to invest in technologies that enhance the customer experience, engage employees, and optimize inventory,” said Christanto Suryadarma, Vice President of Sales, Southeast Asia (SEA), Korea, and APJeC Regional Channel, Zebra Technologies. “As omnichannel shopping increases, Vietnamese consumers expect to find, purchase, consume, and return products seamlessly no matter where they shop. To effectively drive brand preference, retailers will have to adapt and use technology creatively to deliver the shopping experience Vietnamese consumers expect while increasing profitability. Some examples of solutions that will help retailers include barcode scanners (DS2208/DS9308/MP7X) and inventory trackers (TC2X).”
