Here are some of the upgrades expected to appear on the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
24MP front camera
According to sources from analysts Ming-Chi Kuo and Jeff Pu, all four iPhone 17 models will be equipped with an upgraded front camera with a resolution of 24MP. Compared to the 12MP front camera on all iPhone 16 models, this will be a big step forward in the quality of selfie images and videos.
Up to now, Apple has often "favored" upgrading the rear camera system more, but this time selfie enthusiasts can celebrate with "selfies" with quality equal to the rear camera.
48MP Telephoto Camera
The iPhone 17 Pro Max model is said to have a Telephoto camera upgraded to 48MP resolution, instead of 12MP like on the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
While it’s not certain, this change may only appear on the iPhone 17 Pro Max model. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the telephoto camera will use a 48MP, 1/2.6-inch sensor, an improvement over the 12MP 1/3.1-inch on the iPhone 16 Pro.
12GB RAM
The iPhone 17 Pro Max is also rumored to come with 12GB of RAM, up from 8GB on the iPhone 16 Pro Max. This upgrade promises to improve the performance of Apple's Intelligence features and multitasking capabilities. All four iPhone 16 models currently only have 8GB of RAM.
Smaller Dynamic Island
Another exclusive change for the iPhone 17 Pro Max model is that the Dynamic Island will be "significantly narrowed" thanks to hardware changes related to the Face ID system.
According to expert Jeff Pu, Apple will apply metalens technology to the Face ID system. This technology allows the "Apple" to reduce the size of the Face ID system without reducing its efficiency, while also helping to expand the display space on the screen.
A19 Pro Chip
The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max duo are expected to be equipped with Apple's next-generation A19 Pro chip, manufactured on TSMC's third-generation 3nm process.
As usual, the new chip will bring improvements in performance and energy efficiency over current iPhone models.
In addition, sources from Digitimes also said that the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max duo will be the first iPhones equipped by Apple with processors manufactured on TSMC's 2nm process.
Apple-designed Wi-Fi 7 chip
Leaks suggest that at least one iPhone 17 model will feature a Wi-Fi 7 chip designed by Apple, rather than one supplied by Broadcom. Therefore, it is likely that the only new iPhone model equipped with a Wi-Fi 7 chip will be the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
The iPhone 17 series is expected to launch in September 2025, as per Apple's annual tradition. The four iPhone models in 2025 are expected to include: iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Air.
