
Mr. Sugi Ryotaro is a Japanese artist with many outstanding contributions to the cultural exchange and friendship between Japan and Vietnam in general and Hoi An in particular.
On May 15, 2007, Mr. Sugi Ryotaro was appointed as the Special Ambassador of Vietnam - Japan for the term of May 22, 2007 - December 31, 2008 and was extended in December 2008. On October 15, 2009, Mr. Sugi Ryotaro's title was changed to "Special Ambassador of Vietnam - Japan", then extended 6 more times in July 2010, June 2011, June 2012, May 2014, April 2016, May 2018.
In 1998, during his first visit to Hoi An, along with many products imbued with Japanese cultural identity such as carp streamers, Japanese dolls, Edo wind chimes, and especially a very meaningful gift of a modern ambulance, Mr. Sugi Ryotaro, together with Hoi An City, organized the Peace Festival - the precursor to the "Hoi An - Japan Cultural Exchange" festival.

During his return to Hoi An, former Vietnam - Japan Special Ambassador Sugi Ryotaro visited the Japanese Cultural Exhibition House in Hoi An, performed the carp flag-raising ceremony and attended the inauguration ceremony of the restoration project of the Japanese Covered Bridge relic.
Mr. Sugi Ryotaro expressed his honor and joy to witness the successful restoration project of the Japanese Covered Bridge relic and sent his congratulations to the delegates from Japan, Vietnam and the people of Hoi An.
