Shock, disappointment, and grief - these are the common feelings of Vietnamese people living and working abroad when hearing the news of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's passing on July 19, 2024.

As a person who regularly follows news on the media, Ms. Pham Thanh Thuy, Vice President of the Khmer-Vietnamese Association in Cambodia, respects General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong for the great contributions of the leader of the Communist Party of Vietnam to the country and people, especially in the fight against corruption.

Recalling the memory of 2019 when General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong paid a state visit to the Kingdom of Cambodia, Ms. Pham Thanh Thuy was moved to express that she will always remember the gentle, warm smile of the General Secretary, who always cared for and loved the overseas Vietnamese community in general, as well as the overseas Vietnamese community in Cambodia in particular.

Ms. Pham Thanh Thuy said that she and the Vietnamese community in Cambodia always have the most sincere respect and affection for General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

Sharing with VNA reporters in Phnom Penh, Mr. Eang Ra, a Vietnamese living and working in Cambodia, emphasized that the overseas Vietnamese community and people of Vietnamese origin in Cambodia will always remember and send their most sincere thanks for General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's lifelong contributions to the Vietnamese people. From Beijing, Ms. Doan Thi Quynh also expressed gratitude for General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong's contributions to the entire Party and people, such as socio-economic policies and strategies, especially the "unprecedented" anti-corruption campaign.

Talking to a VNA reporter in China, Ms. Doan Thi Quynh emphasized that overseas Vietnamese like her feel secure and encouraged to develop the economy towards Vietnam when witnessing the changes and development of the country in recent years under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam, with General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong as the helmsman.

Having had the honor of welcoming General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong during his visit to Beijing, shaking hands and talking with the General Secretary, Ms. Doan Thi Quynh will never forget the closeness, simplicity and respect of the Vietnamese leader.

She still remembers that when the General Secretary met with overseas Vietnamese at the Vietnamese Embassy in Beijing, he emphasized that overseas Vietnamese must be cared for and must unite towards the country.

“Carving that saying into my heart,” Ms. Doan Thi Quynh shared that she will always look towards her homeland, Vietnam, promising herself to learn and strive to become an excellent Vietnamese person, and that General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong will always be a shining example for future generations. She expressed: “Vietnam is grateful to have Uncle Ho as its leader, and overseas Vietnamese are proud to have Uncle Ho’s care.”

Ms. Tran Thi Chang, President of the Malaysia Friendship Association, recalled the times she met the General Secretary, the two most memorable times being during the 2016 Homeland Spring Festival in Hanoi and the occasion of attending the 9th National Patriotic Emulation Conference in 2015, also in Hanoi.

For her, the General Secretary's impression is of a talented, honest, fair and impartial leader. She emphasized: "He worked without a day off, devoted himself until the end of his life. He was a leader with a heart, bright morality and was very proud of the nation."

Speaking to a VNA reporter in Kuala Lumpur, Ms. Chang recalled the first time she held the General Secretary's hand when overseas Vietnamese returned to celebrate the Spring Festival in their homeland.

Until now, Ms. Chang still clearly remembers the General Secretary's advice: "Overseas Vietnamese must unite, help each other and together look towards the homeland."

For Ms. Chang, the General Secretary's statement: "Overseas Vietnamese are an inseparable part of the Vietnamese nation" always moves her and she considers it "a guiding principle for all her actions."

Remembering the General Secretary's advice, as the President of the Malaysia-Vietnam Friendship Association, an organization with 200 members who are Vietnamese and Malaysians and a team of advisors including many great Malaysian intellectuals, Ms. Chang is always active in all work, aiming to promote and deepen the cooperative relationship between Vietnam and Malaysia./.
