Dozens of KOLs have had their accounts banned by China for "violating community standards" because they frequently go online to show off their wealth and high-class lifestyle, negatively affecting users.

Chinese media describe these materialistic contents as a "toxic influence".

Reader Bach Ngoc Duy Duc commented below the article Dozens of KOLs specializing in flexing luxury life in China have been blocked on Tuoi Tre Online :

"Hopefully Vietnam will do the same to purify KOLs who bring negative influences to young people."

Vietnam is full of people showing off their wealth.

Not only China, Vietnam is also full of people showing off their wealth, money, gold, and luxurious life on social networks. The main purpose is to attract views and likes.

Just type in the keywords "show off money", "show off wealth", "show off gold"... on the search bar of social networks like YouTube, TikTok... and you will easily see countless clips with similar content. These clips all attract a large number of viewers, interactions and comments.

There are even accounts that boast so much that they are considered internet phenomena. Some names include "Huan Hoa Hong", "Phuc Xo" , "Tung Vau"...

Not only internet phenomenon, some famous artists in showbiz also showed off gold and money.

Some artists even show off gold bracelets, bouquets of cash, etc. that fans gave them on their personal pages. There is also a trend in showbiz of "unboxing" and showing off branded goods...

Commenting under the clip of a hot girl smashing a billion-dollar piggy bank to celebrate Tet, account @tanvo1186 said: "Showing off money. Nothing interesting. Just playing on people's love of money." Friend @chungchung6012 commented: "She's attracting attention and getting attention."

Recently on TikTok, the account U.T. is known for clips showing off wealth, gold, spreading money around the house or bags/boxes of money with different denominations... attracting tens of millions of views.

Besides the "disgusting" and "view-baiting" comments, many netizens rushed to ask for money from this account.

Is bragging good or bad?

Speaking with Tuoi Tre Online , Dr. Dang Vu Canh Linh - director of the Vietnam Youth Research Institute - said that it is difficult for anyone to deny the benefits of technology or social networks.

The network provides fast, multi-dimensional information, while affirming the role of small groups and individuals when they have the right to speak up.

"Aside from the positive aspects, social media is an extremely complicated place. When everyone has the right to share their images, clips, and thoughts without caring about what others think, it can easily cause confusion between good and bad, right and wrong,...

Among them, there are many negative things that lead public opinion, create a bad trend or make people waste a lot of time and money...", Mr. Linh shared his perspective.

According to Dr. Linh, instead of working in production, there is a group of people who spend all day online, following negative content.

"Young people, adolescents, and young adults are not yet fully developed in terms of cognition, so when they participate in social networks with a learning attitude, the risk of learning bad things is very quick and very easy," he said.

Why is showing off money, gold, luxury life… considered toxic content?

The representative of the Vietnam Youth Research Institute said that money is important but it is not a measure of all labor, dedication... or human values of a person.

Mr. Dang Vu Canh Linh shared that the fact that some people like to show off their wealth, money, gold... easily makes some people see money as too meaningful and they can disregard everything to have a lot of money, to be rich. This invisibly creates a division in society, between the rich and the poor, not bringing positive and humane values to society.

"Especially nowadays, there are many people who show off their gold, money, assets online... but it is not certain that they made them. Some young people rely on their parents' money, or do illegal business...

That affects young people of the same age - those who are studying day and night, working hard to find a place in society," he added.
