Among those who have or are planning to retire early, there is a large group who have left the city to return to the countryside to become farmers. It is not difficult to find groups such as "Leaving the city for the forest"; "Leaving the city for the sea"; "Leaving the city for the countryside" on social networks... These groups attract tens of thousands of members, including students who have not yet graduated from school.

When asking a question related to the difficulties encountered when retiring early in the "Leaving the city for the forest" group on Facebook, the writer received a series of confidences from people involved.

Mother shaves head in protest against early retirement…

After 16 years of studying and working in the medical field, Ms. Tri Thanh (38 years old, living in Khanh Hoa province) decided to give up her stable job and return to her hometown with her small family. Ms. Thanh shared: Since she was little, her parents had high expectations for her, they always hoped that she would become a talented and virtuous doctor and advance in the future. Therefore, when she heard that she wanted to quit her job, her mother strongly objected.

"At that time, my mother shaved her head in protest and put pressure on me to stop her. She was afraid that society would have a bad view of the family if her children quit their jobs. I was so choked up that I could only confide in my husband and we both encouraged each other to overcome it," Thanh confided.

Ms. Tri Thanh and her family have now returned to their hometown to live.

When deciding to give up a job that many people dream of, having to study hard for many years to be able to work, Ms. Thanh herself also had her own worries: missing her job, financial difficulties, pressure from parents...

"Leaving the city to return to the countryside is not just a personal matter, but also involves family and society. If parents object, it is because they love and care for you. So if young people want to retire early, they must first live and work to the fullest. They should only retire when the time is right. Being a farmer is not easy, it may not require expertise, but skills and endurance are sometimes required twice as much as in the city," said Ms. Tri Thanh.

"Culture shock" when leaving the city to return to the countryside

Instead of pursuing her dream and building a career, Ms. Tran Hong Thao (32 years old) left the city alone and returned to the countryside in Hau Giang province to live.

At first, when she left the city to return to the countryside, Ms. Thao suffered from culture shock.

"I thought that by changing my living environment, I would have the peaceful life I imagined. But the reality is cruel. Returning to my hometown means living in deprivation, uncertainty, anxiety and fear...", Ms. Thao confided.

The place where she lives is quite remote, there are no supermarkets, entertainment areas or shops, and the medical center is very far away. Sometimes there is even a lack of clean water for daily use, and if you want to eat delicious food like meat or seafood, you have to go far to buy it or pay many times more than if you buy it locally.

She recalls: "When I first came here, I was shocked. At 7pm, every house was closed and the lights were dim. As a single girl, it was normal for men to tease me, not to mention that in the countryside, some areas were not safe."

Up to now, Ms. Thao has been back to her hometown for more than 3 years, and has gradually become accustomed to this peaceful and somewhat deprived life. To overcome these difficulties, in addition to farming, she has to sell ornamental plants online for extra income, and install cameras around the house to prevent unexpected events.

Ms. Thao added that for those who have left the city to return to the countryside for a while, it is quite difficult to return to the city to work as before. Because they do not have much capital, their professional skills are depleted, and their relationships are also reduced. Therefore, before making a decision, young people must think carefully, take the initiative to retire early and not follow the trend.

What to prepare for early retirement?

As the owner of the TikTok channel "le tho Da Lat", Ms. Pham Mai Linh has had a clip with more than 1 million views when sharing about her journey to early retirement.

Ms. Pham Mai Linh currently opens art workshops and drawing classes for children in Da Lat.

Since she was young, Linh was nominated to be CEO of a travel company, ran her own restaurant, and managed many large and small projects... However, at the age of 28, this girl decided to give up everything to retire early, go to Bali (Indonesia) for a year of vacation, and then move to Da Lat to live.

She said that leaving the city to live in the forest is not easy. If you do not equip yourself with enough life skills and have a strong determination, it will be difficult to overcome.

"I was happy then and now, just in different ways. When I was young, I threw myself into work and devoted my youth to contributing. I didn't retire because of pressure or because I hated my job, but simply because I wanted to find a new, easier job that matched my passion," Linh confided.

She also emphasized that young people who have not graduated should not think about this yet, youth is beautiful so allow yourself to try and make mistakes. And you have to endure hardship, put yourself in the most difficult situations to realize your own limits. All of these are the most solid provisions that you can carry with you into your future retirement.

According to Ms. Linh, retirement does not mean stopping working, stopping creating value for life, nor is it is isolating oneself from society. It is simply choosing a different lifestyle to have the opportunity to observe and nurture the "child" inside you more.

Early retirement, financial or psychological, which is more important?

Below the writer's post in the group "Leaving the city for the forest", there are many people arguing between finance and psychology, which one needs more attention when retiring early.

According to experienced people, many young people when retiring early focus too much on finances, making money regardless of health. But the truth is that when retiring early, the most worrying thing is the mentality. Many people subjectively ignore this, so they become depressed, disoriented, disconnected, and isolated from the community after retirement.

Dr. Le Thi Mai Lien (Head of Psychology Department, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City National University) advised: "Early retirement is not a bad thing, society always respects the decisions of young people. In the "wheel of life", financial health and mental health seem to play equally important roles. Therefore, in addition to having stable finances, nurturing, preparing mentally, and having risk management plans are also things that should and need to be done if you want to retire early."
