While performing cupping to reduce stress, a woman named TTT (54 years old, living in Long An) had an accident when hot alcohol was spilled on her. The alcohol caught fire and caused severe burns to her back and abdomen.

After the accident, the patient was taken to Xuyen A Long An General Hospital for emergency treatment in a state of severe burning pain and large blisters on the skin. At the Emergency Department, doctors conducted a preliminary examination and determined that the patient had second-degree burns over an area of about 11%, including sensitive areas such as the chest, abdomen and back. Immediately, doctors performed first aid on the spot, strong pain relief, antibiotics, and especially applied measures to prevent burn shock.

On November 14, Dr. Tran Quang Nhat (Orthopedic Trauma Department, Xuyen A Long An General Hospital) said that after first aid, the patient was transferred to the intensive care unit at the Orthopedic Trauma Department. The patient continued to use antibiotics, pain relievers, daily dressing changes for burn care, fluid replacement, monitoring of intake and output balance, and calculation of water loss through the burn. All medical staff and family members entering and exiting must comply with strict infection control measures, maintaining a clean space to prevent the risk of infection for the patient.

After intensive care, the patient's wound recovered very well and he was discharged from the hospital.

Potential burn risk when performing cupping

According to Japanese doctors, cupping is a method that many people still trust with the goal of pain relief, treatment or relaxation. However, cupping has many potential risks and can cause unforeseen consequences. A typical example is the alcohol fire burn in the case of the patient mentioned above. When the patient is severely burned by cupping, it will lead to a deep and wide wound. This burn is not only painful but also takes a long time to heal, requiring the care of a specialized medical team to avoid leaving scars or unwanted sequelae.

If unfortunately burned, people need to go to reputable medical facilities, the nearest hospital to be treated promptly by doctors, should not arbitrarily buy medicine or apply folk remedies to avoid leading to blood infection, burn infection due to improper treatment, scar contraction, affecting the function of burned parts and endangering life.
